Je näher man den engeren Kreisen kommt, umso sündiger bzw. heiliger sind die gestorbenen Seelen. Die göttliche Komödie wird heute auch als dichterisches Hauptsymbol der Scholastik gesehen. Dante (1265-1321) ist der bekannteste Dichter des Italienischen und giltalseiner der bedeutendsten Dichter des europäischen Mittelalters.
