Salammbô est un roman historique de Gustave Flaubert, paru le 24 novembre 1862 chez Michel Lévy frères. Il a pour sujet la guerre des Mercenaires, iiie siècle av. J.-C., qui opposa la ville de Carthage aux mercenaires barbares qu'elle avait employés pendant la première guerre punique, et qui se révoltèrent, furieux de ne pas avoir reçu la solde convenue. Flaubert chercha à respecter l'histoire connue, mais profita du peu d'informations disponibles pour décrire un Orient à l'exotisme sensuel et violent.
Par une chaude journée d'été, à Paris, deux hommes, Bouvard et Pécuchet, se rencontrent et font connaissance. Ils découvrent que, non seulement ils exercent le même métier de copiste, mais qu'en plus ils ont les mêmes centres d'intérêts. S'ils le pouvaient, ils aimeraient vivre à la campagne. Un héritage fort opportun va leur permettre de changer de vie. Ils reprennent une ferme dans le Calvados, non loin de Caen et se lancent dans l'agriculture (agronomie, arboriculture, jardinage, conserverie, distillerie). Leur incapacité à comprendre va n'engendrer que des désastres. De la même manière, ils vont s'intéresser, dans l'ordre, aux sciences (chimie, anatomie, physiologie, médecine, nutrition, astronomie, zoologie, géologie), à l'archéologie (architecture, muséologie, religion celtique, antiquités, histoire, biographie), à la littérature (roman historique, théâtre, critique littéraire, grammaire, esthétique), à la politique, à l'amour, à la philosophie (gymnastique, spiritisme, magnétisme, logique), à la religion, à l'éducation (phrénologie, dessin, histoire naturelle, morale, musique, urbanisme) avec les mêmes résultats. Lassés de tant d'échecs, ils retournent à leur métier de copiste.
Gustave Flaubert est un écrivain français né à Rouen le 12 décembre 1821 et mort à Canteleu, en Seine Maritime, le 8 mai 1880. Gustave est le fils d'Achille Flaubert, chirurgien chef à l'hôpital de Rouen, et de Justine Caroline Fleuriot. Il a un frère ainé, Achille, brillant élève au profit duquel il sera souvent délaissé. Il passe une enfance sans joie, adoucie par l'affection qu'il porte à sa soeur Caroline, de trois ans sa cadette.
