?Hans Delbruck's History of the Art of War long ago attained the status of a classic work in military history. Recently Walter Renfroe, retired West Point professor, undertook the first translation into English of the 1923 edition of Delbruck's four volumes. That effort has now reached the third volume, The Middle Ages, which covers from Carolingian times to the 16th century. The work offers insights ... on such topics as the reasons for Carolingian expansion, an interpretation of feudalism, Italian city-state armies, German expansion against the Slavs, the rise of foot soldiers in the Later Middle Ages, and the emergence of the Swiss as the first modern infantry. Delbruck's aristocratic bias gives a weighted account of the importance of the horse in medieval warfare, but there is much valuable detail here, and text and notes have been translated into readable English. Delbruck must be checked against such modern works as Philippe Contaimine's La Guerre au Moyen Age, but any library maintaining a respectable medieval history collection will want this translation.?-Choice
?In our time, when historians have become increasingly devoted to more detailed studies of smaller and smaller subjects, Delbruck's work is a timely antidote.?-Naval War College Review
?This intensive study will be useful for those familiar with the military and political history used by the author as background. In this excellent translation, based on the third edition of the work (Berlin, 1920), Renfroe has pointed out the very rare errors or oversights within the body of the text; his highly readable translation manages to retain the flavor of the original. Never before available in English, this volume will best serve special and academic libraries.?-Library Journal
Two thirds of a century after it first appeared, this last volume of Delbruck's fundamental work on military history has been translated into English. The work remains essential for the history of European warfare. Choice
Ein Werk des berühmten Historikers Hans Delbrück. Reprint der Ausgabe von 1929. Original in Frakturschrift, hier in neuer Schrift und in Großdruckschrift!
Hans Delbruck's four-volume History of the Art of War is recognized throughout the world as the definitive work on the subject. Appearing in an English language paperback edition for the first time, volume one analyses in vivid detail the military tactics and strategies used by the great warriors of antiquity.
Traces the collapse of the Roman military system and its replacement with barbarian mercenaries by the fourth century, following the invasions by the Germanic peoples. This book offers an examination of the decline of the Germanic-Romanic military system in the Middle Ages and the rise of the feudal system.
Considers developments including the use of gunpowder, the invention of firearms and iron balls. After reviewing the establishment of a European infantry, this work discusses the transformation of loose confederations of knights into cavalry, the organization of fighting mercenaries, and the changing of mercenary bands into standing armies.
From the eighth century through the Middle Ages feudalism determined the nature of European warfare. Medieval Warfare is full of recreations of famous events such as the Battle of Hastings and movements like the Crusades; with the brightest flowers of knighthood, and with the mercenary grandeur of Byzantium.
Reveals the tension between Hans Delbruck's patriotism and his scholarship, which helped him to recognize German military failings. This book features his twenty-four readings, comprising letters written to his mother while he served in the Franco-Prussian War of 1870 and essays, reviews, commentaries, and speeches on military figures, and more.
