Édouard Chavannes1, né à Lyon le 5 octobre 1865 et mort à Paris le 29 janvier 1918, est un archéologue et sinologue français. Grand expert de l'histoire de la Chine et des religions chinoises, il est connu pour sa traduction de la plus grande partie du Shiji (¿¿ / ¿¿, Sh¿jì) de Sima Qian, qui est la première traduction de cet ouvrage dans une langue européenne.Érudit prolifique et influent, Chavannes fut l¿un des sinologues les plus accomplis de l¿ère moderne et, malgré son décès relativement précoce en 1918 à l'âge de 52 ans, est le digne successeur des grands noms de la sinologie française du xixe siècle, tels que Jean-Pierre Abel-Rémusat et Stanislas Julien. C'est en grande partie grâce à son travail que la sinologie est devenue une discipline respectée au sein des sciences humaines françaises. "Édouard Chavannes est mort le mardi 29 janvier 1918, enlevé dans la force de l¿âge, en pleine activité scientifique ; sa perte est la plus cruelle que pouvaient subir les études chinoises dans lesquelles il occupait le premier rang aussi bien à l¿étranger qüen France.Emmanuel-Édouard Chavannes est né le 5 octobre 1865 à Lyon , d¿une excellente famille originaire de Charmoisy, hameau de la paroisse d¿Orsier, situé à deux lieues au sud de Thonon , dans le Chablais. La religion réformée fut introduite dans cette région, en 1536, par les Bernois ; à la fin du siècle, Charles-Emmanuel de Savoie expulsa les protestants et il est probable que parmi eux se trouvait Bernard Chavannes, qui aborda à Territet, dans la paroisse de Montreux , en 1602 et fut admis à la naturalisation le 3 décembre 1618 par Niclaus Manuel, bailli de Vevey et capitaine de Chillon ; Bernard, ancêtre de la famille, périt misérablement écrasé par une avalanche ; il avait épousé Suzanne Prost de Genève, qui lui donna un fils André, dont descendent les membres actuels de la famille."
