Henry James (1843-1916) is today remembered as the most prolific of American novelists of the late nineteenth and early twentieth century. Undoubtedly the quality of his writing has ensured his name is enshrined in the American literary tradition and of American heritage in general. James however was a committed Anglophile and lived most of his life as an expatriate in Europe. Many of his novels juxtapose the Old World with the New World. Classics such as The Portrait of a Lady, Daisy Miller and The Ambassadors, display the encounter between American and European cultures and mentalities. They highlight the differences between the two worlds through following the experiences of American expatriates in Europe. As a critic James was unafraid to venture into reviews and essays of those other literary giants around him. These together with his short stories and, of course, classic novels, make Henry James an author to be not only admired but read, and read often. Furthermore, James's fiction also transcends this recurring theme to offer sophisticated observations of human relations as well as realistic, social criticism.
The Turn of the Screw, a novella written by Henry James in 1898, is perhaps one of the most widely read ghost stories in classrooms across the country. The story's ambiguity and characters' unreliability also mark the book as a work of impressionism, an important literary movement that's often left out of the children's literary "canon." While best-known for The Turn of the Screw, James wrote many ghost stories during his illustrious career. "The Romance of Certain Old Clothes" and "The Ghostly Rental" are two of those short stories included in this edition that young readers will enjoy reading, featuring accessible plots and writing.

Henry James, OM (15 April 1843 - 28 February 1916) was an American-born writer. He is regarded as one of the key figures of 19th-century literary realism. He was the son of Henry James, Sr. and the brother of philosopher and psychologist William James and diarist Alice James. He is best known for a number of novels showing Americans encountering Europe and Europeans. His method of writing from a character's point of view allowed him to explore issues related to consciousness and perception, and his style in later works has been compared to impressionist painting. His imaginative use of point of view, interior monologue and unreliable narrators brought a new depth to narrative fiction. James contributed significantly to literary criticism, particularly in his insistence that writers be allowed the greatest possible freedom in presenting their view of the world. James claimed that a text must first and foremost be realistic and contain a representation of life that is recognisable to its readers. Good novels, to James, show life in action and are, most importantly, interesting. In addition to his voluminous works of fiction he published articles and books of travel, biography, autobiography, and criticism, and wrote plays. James alternated between America and Europe for the first twenty years of his life
