Klingsor's Last Summer tells the story of a famous painter named Klingsor as he experiences a final burst of creativity in his last summer of life. He grabs the cup of life with both hands and drinks until he simply cannot take any more. Klingsor is an expressionist painter ruled by emotion, his commitment to art is total, for art is the embodiment of what he feels to be the essence of life. Klingsor's most prominent traits are his love of extremes. As a person he is violently opposed to moderation or mediocrity. He burns the candle at both ends and shuns the safety of moderation. Klingsor is very much a man of the moment. He does not like to plan ahead in any way. He does not believe in tomorrow and he regards every day as his last. Klingsor's two primary interests in life are creating art and making love and he succeeds in both endeavors. Like Demian, Siddhartha, Goldmund, and Joseph Knecht, Klingsor is no ordinary person. He has attained a remarkable degree of success in his chosen field and he works intensely to maintain this level of achievement. Like other Hesse's heroes, Klingsor seeks and finds his own unique and independent path to fulfillment. The style of the story is expressionist, it conveys a feeling of exuberance and excitement. The imagery is wild and colorful. The reader feels transported to Klingsorr's side as he attempts to embrace the wonders of life and nature with his entire being, only to accept that his time is nearly up. The novel is somehow autobiographical, Hesse began painting around 1917 and Klingsor's Last Summer was written in the summer of 1919, the novel is a more direct self-portrait of the Hesse of that year when Hesse settled in the Ticino mountain village of Montagnola to start a new life without his wife and children. Some of the characters have relevance to Hesse's real life. Hermann the poet could be a self reference and Louis was modeled on Hesse's artist friend Louis Moilliet. Klingsorr, the name, is taken from the magician who appears in Richard Wagner's opera Parsifal.

Knulp is the eternal drifter, a true drop-out of an earlier time. Originally published in Germany in 1915, Knulp was Hermann Hesse's most popular book in the years before he published Demian. During the 1950's, the book was influential on Jack Kerouac author of "On the Road" and "The Dharma Bums" as well as othe Beat Generation authors. During the 1960s and 1970'sn Hesse became a cult figure among young American readers and in 1968 the Californian rock group Steppenwolf, which was named after Hesse's other classic, released 'Born to be Wild', which was featured in the film Easy Rider. With profound understanding and sympathy, but also with some irony, Hesse portrays Knulp's life journey, his love affairs and his questioning of life. The novel reaches a final powerful climax when God reveals to Knulp that the purpose of his life was to bring a little nostalgia for freedom into the lives of ordinary men.

Allerdings zerschlägt Hans am Abend vor der Abreise zum Landexamen einen Kaninchenstall, den er früher stets schätzte. Er besteht landesweit als Zweiter das Landexamen. Dies erlaubt ihm, das Seminar in der Klosterschule in Maulbronn zu besuchen, in dem Landesbeamte und Pastoren ausgebildet werden. Zur Belohnung für seinen Aufstieg in die Bildungselite wird ihm von seinem Vater das Angeln wieder erlaubt. Direktor und Stadtpfarrer drängen Hans zum Lernen in den Ferien, um der gesteigerten Konkurrenz im Seminar gewachsen zu sein. So erhält er täglich einige Stunden Unterricht. Lediglich Schustermeister Flaig, ein einfacher Mann, Menschenfreund, Pietist, der dem Stadtpfarrer ablehnend gegenübersteht, rät ihm zu mehr "Luft und Bewegung".

"If what this subtle clever old bard was singing in his muted voice was true, then all my songs were only nonsense and silly child's play." When Hesse turned thirteen he wanted to be a poet. In the words of John Keating, the character played by Robin Williams in the Dead Poets Society, a poet sucks the marrow out of life without choking on the bone. A bard, on the other hand, is a professional poet employed to compose eulogies for his lord. In Scotland in the 16th century it was a derogatory term for a traveling musician. "Flute Dream" is a short fairy tale written by Hermann Hesse in March 1914, when he was about to turn thirty seven. The story, which was titled "Flötentraum" in German, deals with the subconscious dream world and is based on two of Carl Jung's shadow archetypes, the "Impotent Lover" and the "Weakling King". In Jungian psychology, the poet is one of the main manifestations of the "Lover" archetype. The "Lover" archetype is usually the first that develops in a man. It is the archetype of emotion, feeling, idealism, sensuality and of opening to the world. The Lover feels vigorously alive and is totally connected to those around him and to the world at large. He enjoys good food and drink, beautiful art, gorgeous women and uses all his senses, touching, tasting, smelling, hearing, and seeing, to enjoy life's pleasures. The Greek god Dionysus, the god of wine, art, passion, and sex is perhaps the best example. The "Impotent Lover" shadow arises when a man is out of touch with the Lover archetype in its fullness or feels shame when he indulges himself in life's pleasures. While the Lover in his fullness sees the world in vivid colors and textures, the Impotent Lover only sees gray. A man dogged by the impotent lover archetype feels depressed, flat, and dead inside. Nothing brings him joy, he has no passion for life. The "King" archetype is totally centered and functions as an intermediary between man and god, or heaven and earth. He serves as both the geographic and the spiritual center of his realm. All existence radiates from the King archetype. When a man lives the King archetype in its fullness, he feels confidence, purpose and a sense of well-being that gives him a supreme sense of balance and a centering power within himself. He's the rock in crisis and acts rather than reacts. Even when the world around him becomes chaotic, he remains cool, calm, and collected. A man fully engaged with positive King energy is completely present as a man. The "Weakling King" shadow is passive. Instead of taking control of his life and making decisions in a resolute fashion, a man possessed by the Weakling shadow abdicates his throne to others. This edition also contains "The Poet", which depicts a variation on the true "Lover" archetype where the love of poetry was the main lover's desire and the poet manages to suck the marrow out of life without chocking on the bone.

"The most ruthless of Hesse's many self-exposures." Joseph Mileck Klein and Wagner tells the story of Friedrich Klein, a middle-aged clerk who has embezzled from his employer and escaped to Italy. However, Klein is not a common criminal, but rather a self-alienated, tormented bourgeois in search of peace and self-fulfillment. While pondering his fate, Klein recognizes that his primary motivation was a compulsion and urge to murder his wife and children, which he could only avoid by entirely abandoning his old life. This dark drive is associated with the name Wagner, which alludes to the famous composer and also to an actual German schoolteacher who in September 1913 had killed his wife and children. In spite of his flight, Klein fails to transcend his pain: instead of feeling liberated, he regards himself as a victim of his own thoughts, his brain a kaleidoscope in which the shifting images were directed by somebody else's hand. Throughout the story, Klein repeatedly ponders suicide. In this desperate situation he meets Teresina, a young blonde courtesan who mingles with the local art crowd. He is increasingly drawn to her, although his stance remains ambivalent. To Klein, something about Teresina symbolized vitality as well as a connection to the eternal feminine. But when Teresina asks him about his background, he refuses to give a straight answer. Among the most obvious features of Klein and Wagner are the striking autobiographical parallels. By 1919, Hesse's first wife Mia had been diagnosed as mentally ill. The author was still uncertain whether to seek a divorce. In addition, he feared the responsibility for raising their three sons, Bruno, Heiner, and Martin. In the Spring of 1919, Hesse finally succumbed to his urge to escape, left Bern for Ticino and settled down in the mountain village of Montagnola, where he wrote this story. Whereas the character Klein remains trapped in his identification with Wagner, writing down his story proved instrumental for Hesse in overcoming his deep personal crisis. To Hesse, writing Klein and Wagner fulfilled a clear therapeutic purpose: "Klein is a part of Hesse and will always be; without him, without the transference of my suffering into this mirror, I would not have been able to bear this suffering. It was my salvation that I escaped into solitude and lived completely, day and night, in my writing." Strongly influenced by Expressionism, Klein and Wagner is a modern "psychodrama" that introduces key themes and motifs that dominates Hesse's writing during the following decade, including some striking connections to Steppenwolf.
