If they but knew it, almost all men in their degree, some time or other, cherish very nearly the same feelings towards the ocean with me.

Hermann Melville tog i 1841 hyre på et hvalfangerskib og tilbragte tre år på øer og skibe i Stillehavet, før han vendte hjem via Tahiti og Hawaii. Erfaringer fra disse rejser dannede baggrund for hans første bøger,Typee (1846) og Omoo (1847). Det var populære eventyrromaner, som skaffede ham et stort publikum.
