The year is 1954, and for the first time, we may meet a very interesting persona... Throughout the novels of the great Angela Thirkell, the movie star, Glamora Tudor, is always off stage. We only hear about her latest film and her new handsome co-star. Yet we have always sensed a delightful and interesting personality just waiting to emerge into the Barsetshire scene. So why is she never there in person? We think that the omission may have two reasons. First, it could have been a simple oversight. Second, Glamora does not live in Barsetshire, so she can't show up. The solution to either possibility is to find a good reason for Miss Tudor to visit Barsetshire! Let her march boldly in wearing the glamorous New Look, since she must have ordered her clothes in Paris, let her be British, even though we do not agree that she was based on Anna Neagle, and let her bring some interesting friends of which we have never heard before. So here she is in Glorious Technicolor, and as Miss Jessica Dean would say, let the games begin!
What Is the world going mad? You can't possibly tell me that Glamora Tudor is ditching her high heels, that Mrs. Rivers is vamping a younger man, and that the staid academic world is shaken by a crime against a rare cactus? Well, I am afraid so... the scandalous film, Send me no Lilies, is completed, so the gang is going to Hollywood to create a new, huge musical extravaganza, and we will witness the rise of some very exciting new stars. And back in Barchester, two plant fanatics, Lady Norton and a famous Professor of botany are struggling against all odds to create a horticultural miracle that would set the academic world of botany on fire. Would they be able to raise, under the rainy sky of England, the rare cactus Echinocactus horizonthalonius var. nicholii, a monstrosity that can only grow on alluvial fans composed of limestone-derived soils in the Waterman and Vekol Mountains, and can split rock with its roots? Or would they be stopped by unknown perpetrators of international crime? And would you please tell me the real identity of this interesting butler?
A tiny Cinnabar box contains the key to the water supply of an entire planet. The ecology of the planet depends on a great river that periodically overflows, much like the Nile in Egypt. Only the key's rightful owner can restore the water supply, which has been hidden for centuries. The task needs a trained army - but for the moment, it is in the hands of thirteen-year-old Donna, who has just learned a shocking secret about herself. Donna must survive in an alien reality where magic is commonplace, and where she meets many dangerous beings she previously considered the products of fairy tales. A nightmarish trip to the terrifying Wizard Island, a ghost town that imprisons visitors in its empty houses, and encounters with an evil renegade vizier who is determined to turn the planet into a desert, are just a few of her adventures. Throughout many ordeals, Donna uses her wits and relies on two important facts. First, she must save her kidnapped aunt, whatever it takes. Second, she must never, ever break the Wicca Code!
