""Four Lectures on Mathematics"" is a book written by Jacques Hadamard and originally published in 1915. The book is a collection of four lectures that were delivered by the author at Columbia University in 1914. The lectures cover a range of topics in mathematics, including the theory of functions, differential equations, and the calculus of variations. The first lecture focuses on the theory of functions and explores the concept of analyticity, which is the property of a function to be expressed as a power series. The second lecture delves into the topic of differential equations, covering both ordinary and partial differential equations. The third lecture examines the calculus of variations, which is the study of the optimization of functions. Finally, the fourth lecture discusses the Riemann hypothesis, which is one of the most famous unsolved problems in mathematics.Hadamard's writing is clear and concise, making the lectures accessible to both students and professionals in the field of mathematics. The book is a valuable resource for those interested in the history and development of mathematics, as well as for those looking to deepen their understanding of the subject. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations. Because we believe this work is culturally important, we have made it available as part of our commitment for protecting, preserving, and promoting the world's literature in affordable, high quality, modern editions, that are true to their original work.

This seminal work of Hadamard on the mathematical theory of waves was written over 100 years ago and it continues to be cited as a reference by researchers in mathematical physics. The reason for the enduring interest in this book can be found in its legacy. The conception of waves as discontinuities in some level of derivative of a wave function that propagate along the bicharacteristics of the wave equation spawned many of the important advances to both the purely mathematical theory of hyperbolic equations, as well as the more physical and engineering-oriented treatments of the subject of wave motion. In mathematics, one can follow the implications of this work into the subsequent lectures that Hadamard gave on the Cauchy problem for linear partial differential equations. One should, however, regard this masterful treatise not only as a precursor to the later lectures on the Cauchy problem, but as a complementary work in which he establishes the roots of the mathematical theory in continuum mechanics.

Explores the complex problem of mental life. This book argues that the roots of creativity for lie not in consciousness, but in the long unconscious work of incubation, and in the unconscious aesthetic selection of ideas that thereby pass into consciousness.
