*Updated for 2023 with VMware Workstation version 17 information.* Information Technology has come a long way in the past 10 years and one of the greatest advancements in this field has to be that of virtualizing computers and servers in order to save IT administrators a lot of time and their companies a lot of money when it comes to building their backend systems. And now we can even go beyond virtualizing computers and virtualize our networks as well.Because virtualization allows us to run multiple computers (virtual machines) on one piece of hardware it makes it's easy to set up multiple systems quickly and also allows a way for us to set up "test" systems that we can use for our labs to test out new software and operating systems. Then when we are done, we simply wipe out that test system and it was like it was never there.Since virtualization is so common within organizations, it was just a matter of time before it was implemented on a smaller scale so we could use it on our desktops. Now we have software like VMware Workstation Pro which allows us to create multiple virtual machines within one physical machine (your desktop computer) and even let them communicate with each other via their virtual networks. The goal of this book is to get you up and running with VMware Workstation and cover all the things you need to know to get you started on creating virtual machines and a virtualized environment without confusing you at the same time. It sticks with the basics yet covers a wide variety of topics to help you achieve your goals and get your VMs up and running in no time. This book has some advanced topics but is not a super high level book on VMware Workstation. The chapters in the book cover the following topics: Chapter 1 - Virtualization OverviewChapter 2 - Installing VMware WorkstationChapter 3 - The VMware Workstation InterfaceChapter 4 - Creating a Virtual MachineChapter 5 - Virtual Machine SettingsChapter 6 - NetworkingChapter 7 - Snapshots & CloningChapter 8 - Preferences & ExtrasAbout the AuthorJames Bernstein has been working with various companies in the IT field for over 20 years, managing technologies such as SAN and NAS storage, VMware, backups, Windows Servers, Active Directory, DNS, DHCP, Networking, Microsoft Office, Exchange, and more.He has obtained certifications from Microsoft, VMware, CompTIA, ShoreTel, and SNIA, and continues to strive to learn new technologies to further his knowledge on a variety of subjects. He is also the founder of the website OnlineComputerTips.com, which offers its readers valuable information on topics such as Windows, networking, hardware, software, and troubleshooting. With more and more of our daily tasks being done online, it makes sense that we should be able to access our important files from any device at any location that has an internet connection. Online file storage or "cloud storage" is not new and has been around for many years now. And we all know that Google has been around forever as well so it makes sense that they would have their own online storage service which they call Google Drive. There are many other cloud storage options that you might have heard of such as Microsoft OneDrive which comes with Windows or the very popular Dropbox which most people have used at some point. All of these services have free and pay for options and most of the time the free version does the job just fine, especially for the average home or small business user. Cloud storage services like Google Drive are a great way to back up your important files since they will be stored at an offsite location so that way if something happens to your computer and you lose everything, you will have a copy of these files that you can then recover once you get your computer back in working order. One thing to keep in mind is that you really don't know where Google is storing your files since they might be somewhere on a server in another state or even another country! These services are also a great way to share files with others who you are collaborating with because you can then work on the same file and any changes are saved within your Drive rather than having to email a file back and forth and try and keep track of who made the latest updates to the file. It also comes in handy for sending a large file to someone that might be too big to email because you can simply share a link to the file, and they can then download it from your Drive account. If you have used any of the other online file storage apps then you should be able to get the hang of Google Drive without getting too large of a headache. And if you have never used any type of online cloud storage service, it shouldn't be too difficult to get up and running once you start using it.
These days everyone has a desktop computer, laptop, or at least a device such as a smartphone or a tablet that they use to do things such as go online, send emails, and so on. And for the people who use a personal computer at home or at work, then there is a very good chance that it is running Microsoft Windows, especially at the office where Windows has a much larger market share than other operating systems such as Apple's Mac OS. When Windows 10 first came out, Microsoft has said that it would be the last version of their desktop operating system and that they would just continue to update it and add new features rather than come out with new versions. But now that Windows 11 is out, that proves what many of us always believed, that there would eventually be a replacement for Windows 10. The goal of this book is to help you get the most out of your Windows 11 computer and make you a more proficient computer user. I will cover the basics (in detail) to better help you understand how to do things like configure and customize Windows, use the great built-in features and software as well troubleshoot issues that you may run into while using your computer. A lot of this content will apply to previous versions of Windows, so you will be able to apply your newfound knowledge to older computers as well.

And for the people who use a personal computer at home or at work, then there is a very good chance that it is running Microsoft Windows and if it's not, then you are most likely using a Mac and are reading the wrong book! When Windows 10 first came out, Microsoft has said that it would be the last version of their desktop operating system and that they would just continue to update it and add new features rather than come out with new versions. But now that Windows 11 is out, that proves what many of us always believed, that there would eventually be a replacement for Windows 10. And when a company releases new software, they feel the need to change things around to make it look like it has been "upgraded" but many times, they are making changes just to justify calling it new! The goal of this book is to help you get the most out of your Windows 11 computer and make you a more proficient computer user. I will cover the basics (in detail) to better help you understand how to do things like open programs, locate your files, customize your desktop, install apps and games, browse the internet, navigate the Windows Start menu and more. I always like to take a step-by-step approach so users at any skill level will be able to follow along. I will also include many screenshots to help you see what I am discussing in case you want to follow along on your own computer.
