'A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man' is a coming-of-age novel by Irish author James Joyce, which follows the life and artistic development of young Stephen Dedalus. In it, Joyce explores life in Ireland at the time, as Stephen grows up and finds his way in the world. We follow as he attends college, battles with religion, engages in social and political intrigues, and suffers the embarrassments that come with adolescence, as the young poet struggles to find his direction in life. Semi-autobiographical, 'A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man' is a fascinating insight into life in 20th century Ireland, as well as into the development of Joyce the writer too. -

First published in 1914, ‘Dubliners’ was Irish novelist James Joyce’s first short story collection. The collection explores middle-class life in Ireland in the 20th century and the search for a national identity. Stories in the collection include that of a stereotypical Irish family in ‘Counterparts’, the virtues and stubbornness of the Irish mother figure in ‘Mother’ and a powerful exploration of life and death in ‘The Dead’. A classic collection from one of the most influential and important writers of the century. James Joyce (1882-1941) was an Irish novelist, poet and short story writer. Born in Dublin, Joyce attended University College Dublin, before moving to Europe with his wife Nora Barnacle. It was whilst living in Trieste that Joyce wrote and published his first book of poems and his short story collection ‘Dubliners’. During WWI Joyce was living in Zurich and it was here that he wrote perhaps his most famous work, ‘Ulysses’. One of the most influential and important writers of the 20th century, his other famous works include ‘A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man’ and ‘Finnegans Wake’. He died in Paris in 1941 at the age of 58.

A masterpiece of modern fiction, James Joyce's semiautobiographical first novel follows Stephen Dedalus, a sensitive and creative youth who rebels against his family, his education, and his country by committing himself to the artist's life. ';I will not serve,' vows Dedalus, ';that in which I no longer believeand I will try to express myself in some mode of life or art as freely as I can.' Likening himself to God, Dedalus notes that the artist ';remains within or behind or beyond or above his handiwork, invisible, refined out of existence, indifferent, paring his fingernails.' Joyce's rendering of the impressions of childhood broke ground in the use of language. ';He took on the almost infinite English language,' Jorge Luis Borges said once. ';He wrote in a language invented by himself....Joyce brought a new music to English.' A bold literary experiment, this classic has had a huge and lasting influence on the contemporary novel.

Selected by the Modern Library as one of the 100 best novels of all timePublished in 1916, James Joyce's semiautobiographical tale of his alter ego, Stephen Dedalus, is a coming-of-age story like no other. A bold, innovative experiment with both language and structure, the work has exerted a lasting influence on the contemporary novel.'Joyce dissolved mechanism in literature as effectively as Einstein destroyed it in physics,' wrote Alfred Kazin. 'He showed that the material of fiction could rest upon as tense a distribution and as delicate a balance of its parts as any poem. Joyce's passion for form, in fact, is the secret of his progress as a novelist. He sought to bring the largest possible quantity of human life under the discipline of the observing mind, and the mark of his success is that he gave an epic form to what remains invisible to most novelists.... Joyce means many things to different people; for me his importance has always been primarily a moral one. He was, perhaps, the last man in Europe who wrote as if art were worth a human life.... By living for his art he may yet have given others a belief in art worth living for.'

Correction of imperfections: As the work was re-created from the scratch, therefore, it was vetted to rectify certain conventional norms with regard to typographical mistakes, hyphenations, punctuations, blurred images, missing content/pages, and/or other related subject matters, upon our consideration. Every attempt was made to rectify the imperfections related to omitted constructs in the original edition via other references. • - Dubliners (unabridged edition): A collection of fifteen short stories by James Joyce

Dubliners is a collection of fifteen short stories by James Joyce, first published in 1914. They form a naturalistic depiction of Irish middle class life in and around Dublin in the early years of the 20th century. The stories were written when Irish nationalism was at its peak, and a search for a national identity and purpose was raging; at a crossroads of history and culture, Ireland was jolted by various converging ideas and influences. They centre on Joyce's idea of an epiphany: a moment where a character experiences a life-changing self-understanding or illumination, and the idea of paralysis where Joyce felt Irish nationalism stagnated cultural progression, placing Dublin at the heart of this regressive movement. Many of the characters in Dubliners later appear in minor roles in Joyce's novel Ulysses. The initial stories in the collection are narrated by child protagonists, and as the stories continue, they deal with the lives and concerns of progressively older people. This is in line with Joyce's tripartite division of the collection into childhood, adolescence and maturity.Table of contents  : The SistersAn EncounterArabyEvelineAfter the RaceTwo GallantsThe Boarding HouseA Little CloudCounterpartsClayA Painful CaseIvy Day in the Committee RoomA MotherGraceThe Dead

Although it is now an acknowledged literary masterpiece, James Joyce's A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man was all but rejected when first presented to the world (no one in Britain would publish the work). The book relates the story of Stephen Dedalus, from young child to early manhood, charting his journey of self-discovery, from the trials of boarding school, through the sexual awakening of adolescence and rebellion against Ireland's religious strictures to his own very personal battle to discover meaning and 'a voice' as a budding artist.Stephen Dedalus is James Joyce's alter ego, an attempt at "turning his life into fiction". Joyce himself struggled with all his hero's problems, and the book is patently semi-biographical. More importantly, it is also Joyce's attempt to break free from the rigid literary forms of his time: he uses a variety of experimental techniques to give depth and colour to his narrative, mixing styles to emphasise the chaotic nature of his hero's thoughts, and revealing a gradual complexity of mentation as he moves towards manhood. The result is a surprisingly profound and moving account that succeeds in laying bare, on multiple levels, the complexity of human existence.

The story follows Leopold Bloom on a seemingly ordinary day in Dublin, during which Bloom's wife, Molly, commits adultery. This experimental novel is among the most important works of Modernist literature. It was initially deemed obscene in England and the USA for its scandalously frank, life-changing reading experience.
