Kuya Kai, a year old chow puppy, resident of Anchorage, Alaska, experiences adventures on the busy streets and wilderness trail systems of this northern metropolitan city. Confused by the family's move from the old house to the new house, Kuya and his dog cousin Kijik, a Husky mix breed, become separated from their humans. While Kijik is rescued early-on in the adventure, Kuya is not so fortunate and faces one life threatening challenge after another as he attempts to find his way eleven miles across Anchorage. This unique city, carved from a wilderness that still intertwines with shopping centers and suburbs, presents seemingly insurmountable obstacles, threats and adventures for any dog, especially one so young and inexperienced, but it is the path home if Kuya can puzzle out the intricacies of the many intersecting trails and survive the dangers and challenges he encounters on his odyssey. Told from his own youthful point of view, "Kuya Kai" is a coming of age novel for early adolescent readers and adults, as well. A great "read aloud" adventure, the whole family will laugh at Kuya's innocent perceptions and cheer him on as, despite his injuries and fear, he discovers the strength and courage to find his way home to his beloved Cindy. Go to Kuya Kai's Facebook page to see photos of Kuya Kai and Kijik both during the story and as they grew up. The online pictures can be used while reading the story to identify action from chapter to chapter. A sequel, "On the Fly, Kijik and I", is planned.
In this sequel to "Kuya Kai, Aventures of an Alaskan Chow Puppy", Kijik and Kuya Kai are on the fly again. When an encounter with old friends, leads Kuya to abandon Kijik in the nearby forest park, Kijik's confident husky personality compels her to pursue her own day of adventures. But as her inexperience and impulsive decisions lead her further and further from the security of the neighborhood she knows, Kijik begins to realize just how much family means to her. She may have the skills to survive a night alone in the Alaskan wilderness, but she must still figure out how to return to Anchorage and home. Meanwhile, Kuya uses his own canine skills and resources to help their humans find his little dog cousin and bring her safely back home to the family who loves her. A coming of age tale for early adolescent readers. Includes Maps and Researchable Questions for Discussion and Review.
Amy's problem was life threatening on more than one occasion. Janice, being her mother and a former nurse, found herself constantly doing every thing in her power to keep Amy alive. Doctors, other medical personnel, family members, friends, churches, and communities all gave tremendous efforts toward helping. While you are reading Janice's accounts of the journey to save Amy, you will get a real sense of the importance of her faith and the faith of Amy as well as others. "Saving Amy" is a book readers will want to finish once started, a book that will likely make most readers feel very fortunate, a book that will help some readers cope better with their own family health battles.
