Fransk klassisk tragedie af Jean Racine.Tragedien blev første gang opført i 1677 i Paris og hører så absolut til Racines bedste skuespil. Racines forbillede er den oprindelige græske tragedie og Euripides skuespil "Hippolytos". Fædra er gift med Theseus, kongen i Athen, men hun bærer på en frygtelig hemmelighed, en dødelig forelskelse i sin stedsøn, Hippolytos.Tragedien som genre beskæftiger sig altid med dybt menneskelige konflikter, og derfor er dens temaer eviggyldige og til stadighed aktuelle. Konflikten i "Fædra" udspiller sig som en kamp mellem fornuften og kærligheden, en magtkamp i den oprindelige græske tragedie mellem guderne om magten i mennesket. Grækerne lagde kærlighedens magt ind under gudernes vilje, men hvad gør det moderne menneske ? Kærligheden er stadig den største magt i menneskets underbevidsthed og stadig en lige uforståelig irrationel størrelse, som selv vor højt udviklede videnskab ikke kan kortlægge. Jean Racines tragedie i 3 akter blev første gang opført i Sain-Syr 1689. Her blev det opført af unge kvindelige elever på "Maison royale de Saint-Louis", der var en skole for unge piger af "ædel byrd". Handlingen er taget fra Biblens fortælling om Esther.

En écrivant Les Plaideurs en 1668, Racine s'est inspiré des Guêpes d'Aristophane mais en a retiré toute la portée politique. La pièce de Racine, qui suit Andromaque et précède Britannicus, est une farce inattendue dans son oeuvre. Un juge sort de chez lui par la fenêtre, des chiots urinent sur la scène, deux jeunes amoureux se jouent du père de la jeune fille, le tout en alexandrins. La pièce a été représentée à l'Hôtel de Bourgogne en novembre 1668. Plus grand succès de Racine jusqu'au XIXe siècle, Les Plaideurs ont concurrencé les comédies les plus populaires de Molière avant de sombrer dans un demi-oubli au cours du XXe siècle.

Comme Eschyle dans Les Perses, Racine a pris le sujet de Bajazet dans l'histoire contemporaine tout en prenant soin de choisir une civilisation lointaine, l'Empire ottoman. En 1635, le sultan Mourad IV (devenu Amurat chez Racine) a fait exécuter ses frères Bajazet (Bayezid) et Orcan, rivaux potentiels. Racine s'inspire de ce fait en centrant l'action sur le personnage de Bajazet. Il développe aussi plusieurs intrigues amoureuses dans le sérail. L'action est particulièrement complexe et ne peut se dénouer que par une succession de meurtres et de suicides.
