Alexandre le Grand est une tragédie en cinq actes (comportant respectivement 3, 5, 7, 5 et 3 scènes) et en vers (1548 alexandrins) de Jean Racine. Elle fut créée le 4 décembre 1665 au Théâtre du Palais-Royal à Paris. La tragédie a pour sujet les amours d'Alexandre et de Cléofile, ainsi que la rivalité entre Porus et Taxile pour l'amour d'Axiane. Racine, dans un souci de réalisme historique, a principalement fondé son intrigue sur des éléments décrits dans le huitième livre de Quinte-Curce. Notons qu'au travers du personnage d'Alexandre auquel Louis XIV aimait être comparé, c'est le Roi-Soleil lui-même qui est célébré.

Andromaque est une tragédie en cinq actes et en vers de Jean Racine écrite en 1667 et représentée pour la première fois au château du Louvre le 17 novembre 1667. Elle comporte 1648 alexandrins. L'argument de la pièce se résume en une phrase: Oreste aime Hermione, mais elle aime Pyrrhus, qui aime Andromaque, qui aime encore le souvenir de son mari, Hector, tué pendant la guerre de Troie. Racine s'inspire de chants de L'Iliade d'Homère, notamment pour la figure d'Andromaque. Son histoire avait déjà été traitée par Euripide dans ses pièces Andromaque et Les Troyennes, cette dernière ayant été adaptée plus tard par Sénèque, mais Racine cite dans sa première préface L'Énéide de Virgile comme source principale de référence.

Représentée pour la première fois à Versailles le 18 août 1674, Iphigénie marque le retour de Racine à des thèmes mythologiques après une série de sujets historiques (Britannicus, Bérénice, Bajazet, Mithridate). Sur les rivages d'Aulis, les Grecs se préparent à aller attaquer Troie. Mais ils ne peuvent atteindre Troie, car les dieux retiennent les vents nécessaires au départ de l'expédition. Agamemnon, leur chef, est donc contraint de consulter l'oracle Calchas, qui lui ordonne de sacrifier sa fille, Iphigénie, afin d'apaiser la déesse Artémis. Dans le chaos provoqué par les indécisions d'Agamemnon, Iphigénie se soumet aux volontés de son père. Ambition d'Agamemnon, désir de gloire d'Achille, orgueil de Clytemnestre, jalousie d'Ériphile: la pièce donne à voir des passions déchaînées qui, toutes, font d'Iphigénie leur victime. Comme chez Euripide dans Iphigénie à Aulis, le personnage le plus fort moralement n'est pas Agamemnon, chef pusillanime, mais Iphigénie, qui pousse le respect filial et le patriotisme jusqu'à accepter la mort.

Mithridate est une tragédie en cinq actes de Jean Racine. Le sujet est tiré de l'histoire ancienne. Mithridate VI Eupator (132-63 av. J.-C.) régna sur le royaume du Pont, autour de la mer Noire. Célèbre pour s'être progressivement accoutumé aux poisons par mithridatisation, il résista longtemps aux Romains, allant jusqu'à imaginer un projet d'invasion de l'Italie. Il finit par se donner la mort après avoir été trahi par son propre fils. Racine réunit plusieurs épisodes de la vie de Mithridate en une seule journée et, comme à son habitude, donne une grande importance aux intrigues amoureuses. Mais la dimension épique demeure plus présente que dans d'autres tragédies. Sur le plan du style, la pièce se distingue par un grand nombre de longs discours et de monologues. Mithridate fut la tragédie préférée d'un autre grand roi, Louis XIV, ainsi que de Charles XII de Suède. Aux siècles suivants, la pièce se fera de plus en plus rare sur scène. C'est aujourd'hui l'une des pièces de Racine les moins jouées.
