I revolutionsåret 1789 forlader Jens Baggesen (1764-1826) København for at indtage et Europa, der er under afgørende forandring. I Labyrinten beskriver den unge forfatter sit møde med de europæiske storbyer og livsvilkårene her, med naturen, med kvinderne, med tidens store digterprofiler, og ikke mindst – med sig selv. Baggesens selvbekendende rejseskildring eller rejsebeskrivende selvbekendelse blev 1700-tallets mest originale prosaværk og forfatterens blivende værk. Selv knyttede han følgende ord til det: »Jeg veed ikke om min Labyrint er Helvede nærmere end Paradiis; jeg befrygter endog, oprigtig tilstaaet, det første; thi formodentlig vil ingen finde den saa moersom og behagelig, som mange ville finde den modbydelig og keedende – men i een eeneste Ting kan den dog lignes ved Himmeriges Rige, deri nemlig, kiæreste Læserinder og Læsere! at uden I blive som Børn, komme I egentlig aldrig ret ind deri!« Siden Labyrinten første gang blev trykt i to bind i 1792 og 1793 har Jens Baggesens følsomme rejseberetning kun kunnet læses i beskårne og hårdt redigerede udgaver. Her udgives den for første gang i sin oprindelige helhed.

Kallundborgs Krønike udkom første gang i Knud Lyne Rahbeks og Christen H. Prams tidsskrift Minerva i august 1786 . Baggesen udgav den under det fiktive forfatternavn Simon Simonsen. Versfortællingen handler om en borgmester i byen Kalundborg, som har meget svært ved at falde i søvn. For at underholde sig under sin søvnløshed får borgmesteren sin kone til at læse op af den såkaldte Kallundborgs Krønike . Da borgmesteren hører historien om en tyv, der bliver hængt to gange, tror han fejlagtigt, at historien er en parodi over ham selv. I arrigskab kræver han derfor bogen konfiskeret og brændt, og han forlanger, at der genindføres censur i Kalundborg, hvor der ellers havde været trykkefrihed. Baggesens satiriske fortælling har flere ligheder med Ludvig Holbergs komiske helte digt Peder Paars ( 1719 - 1720 ) , men det er samtidig en meget aktuel sk ildring af den politiske tilstand i slutningen af 1700 -tallet . I 1770 indførtes der trykkefrihed i Danmark, og det fik udgivelsen af alle publikationer til at eksplodere . Allerede i 1772 begyndte regeringen at indskrænke trykke - og ytringsfriheden i landet, og derfor blev trykkefrihed og censur store debatemner ikke alene i 1770’erne, men også i 1780’erne og 1790’erne. Fremfor at beskrive landets samlede historie, har Baggesen henlagt sin fortælling til provinsen Kalundborg. Her er livet blomstret gevaldigt op, efter der er blevet indført trykkefrihed , og censuren er blevet afskaffet. Byen oplever imidlertid både kulturel og økonomisk nedgang , da man vælger at genindføre censur . Selvom Baggesen ikke skriver det direkte, så er læseren ikke i tvivl om på hvilken side i debatten, forfatteren står. Versfortællingen gav mærkeligt nok ikke anledning til nogle trykkefrihedssager mod Baggesen, men værket var et vigtigt kritisk indlæg i debatterne om ytringsfrihed og censur i samtiden.(Bakkehusmuseet)

"Labyrinten" er en beskrivelse af en rejse ned gennem Tyskland til Schweiz og Frankrig i revolutionsåret 1789. "Labyrinten" er på højde med Sternes "Sentimental Journey" i sit både muntre og følelsesfulde sprog. Den impressionistiske beskrivelse af opstigningen i Strasbourgs domkirke er medrivende og skrækindjagende - man får bogstavelig talt gåsehud af at læse om den farefulde bedrift. Baggesen er romantisk og letbevægelig, men samtidig et ægte barn af oplysningstiden med dens præg af fornuft og varm humanisme. Baggesen er oprørt over de umenneskelige forhold, jøderne lever under i ghettoen i Frankfurt, og en fortaler for tolerance. Han er opildnet af den franske revolution, der netop er begyndt, men frygter samtidig, at den vil udarte til et blodbad. Som læser kommer man tæt på den 25-årige forfatter, og man kan ikke lade være med at synes om ham og glæde sig over hans litterære evner, der så tydeligt folder sig ud i denne ungdomsbog.
