When we refer to the safety of children in radiology services, the first thing that comes to mind, or at least should be, is the associated risk of cancer throughout the life of these patients derived from the exposure to ionizing radiation. This book, without intending to delve into the genetic and molecular bases of this pernicious effect, aims to address in a concise and simple way the reason for this potential risk without avoiding the controversies that still exist in this regard. Likewise, also in a concise but rigorous way, we show how the safety of the pediatric patient in said hospital environment is a much broader and more complex field of study and work. Within this complexity we include the adequate management of the risks associated with the use of contrast media, the transfer of patients from the different neonatal units, the sedation required in magnetic resonance studies and exposure to magnetic fields that this last technique of image generates.

Cuando hacemos referencia a la seguridad de los niños en los servicios de radiología, lo primero que nos viene a la mente o, al menos, debiera ser así, es el riesgo asociado de cáncer a lo largo de la vida de estos pacientes derivado de la exposición a la radiación ionizante. Este libro, sin ánimo de profundizar en las bases genéticas y moleculares de tal efecto pernicioso, pretende abordar de forma concisa y sencilla el porqué de este riesgo potencial sin eludir las controversias que todavía siguen existiendo al respecto. Asimismo, también de manera escueta pero rigurosa, mostramos como la seguridad del paciente pediátrico en dicho ámbito hospitalario es un campo de estudio y de trabajo mucho más amplio y complejo. Dentro de esta complejidad incluimos la adecuada gestión de los riesgos asociados al uso de medios de contraste, al traslado de pacientes desde las distintas unidades neonatales, a la sedación requerida en los estudios de resonancia magnética y a la exposición a los campos magnéticos que esta última técnica de imagen genera.
