The Story of Geronimo is a historical biography written by Jim Kjelgaard. The book tells the story of Geronimo, one of the most famous Native American leaders of the Apache tribe. Geronimo was born in 1829 in what is now New Mexico and lived a life of constant conflict with the US government and settlers who were encroaching on Apache lands. Despite numerous treaties and promises made by the US government, Geronimo and his people were repeatedly forced from their homes and onto reservations. The book chronicles Geronimo's life from his early years as a warrior, through his struggles against the US Army and his eventual surrender, to his time as a prisoner of war and his later years as a celebrity and advocate for Native American rights. Kjelgaard's writing is engaging and informative, providing readers with a detailed look at Geronimo's life and the historical context in which he lived.Overall, The Story of Geronimo is a fascinating and well-written biography that sheds light on the struggles and triumphs of one of the most famous Native American leaders in history. It is a must-read for anyone interested in Native American history and culture. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations. Tammie neared the log, sprang, and six of the seven young grouse took fluttering wing. The seventh, clamped in Tammie's slender jaws, fluttered a moment and was still. Eyes proud, plumed tail waving, Tammie trotted back to Ted and placed the prize in his master's hand. Ted complimented him. "Good boy, Tammie!" He took the young grouse gently, feeling its thumping heart and understanding its terrified eyes. It wasn't hurt. When teaching Tammie to catch various birds and animals, Ted had taught him to be tender-mouthed. After a moment, he tossed his captive into the air and watched it fly out of sight. "Let's go, dog." They broke out of the beech woods onto the abutment that rose above. Almost solid rock, nothing grew here except lichens and, in the cracks, occasional strips of grass.

The mare's presence proved that Delgadito's wife was home. If she saw Geronimo stealing the war horse she would tell her husband. The punishment sure to follow would be harsh and long remembered. Delgadito knew how to use a switch on headstrong boys. Geronimo crouched in his hiding place, waiting. Soon Delgadito's wife came from the wickiup, mounted her mare, and rode away. Geronimo rose and walked swiftly down the hill. The stallion raised its head and watched with eyes that were fearless and questioning. Geronimo grasped the buckskin tie rope, and was drawing the horse to him when- "You leave my uncle's war horse alone!" A girl had come from the wickiup. Geronimo was so interested in the horse that he did not even know she was near until she spoke. Her name was Alope, and she was Delgadito's niece.
