"East of the Sun and West of the Moon: Old Tales from the North" is a collection of Norwegian folk tales, collected by Peter Christen Asbjørnsen and Jørgen Moe in the mid-nineteenth century. The haunting and compelling nature of these folk tales from the frozen lands of the North and the renowned illustrator Kay Nielsen's spellbinding illustrations therefore make this one of the most stunning and beautiful children's books ever produced. Es war einmal ein armer Mann, der hatte drei Söhne. Als er starb, wollten die beiden ältesten in die Welt reisen, um ihr Glück zu versuchen; aber den jüngsten wollten sie gar nicht mit haben. »Du da,« sagten sie: »taugst zu nichts Anderm, als in der Asche zu wühlen. Du!« ¿ »So muß ich denn allein gehen,« sagte Aschenbrödel. Die beiden gingen und kamen zu einem Königsschloß; da erhielten sie Dienste, der eine beim Stallmeister, und der andre beim Gärtner. Aschenbrödel ging auch fort und nahm einen großen Backtrog mit, das war das Einzige, was die Ältern hinterlassen hatten, wonach aber die andern beiden nichts fragten; der Trog war zwar schwer zu tragen, aber Aschenbrödel wollte ihn doch nicht stehen lassen. Als er eine Zeitlang gewandert war, kam er ebenfalls zu dem Königsschloß, und dort bat er um einen Dienst. Sie antworteten ihm aber, daß sie ihn nicht brauchen könnten; da er indeß so flehentlich bat, sollte er zuletzt die Erlaubniß haben, in der Küche zu sein und der Köchinn Holz und Wasser zuzutragen. Er war fleißig und flink, und es dauerte nicht lange, so hielten Alle viel von ihm; aber die beiden Andern waren faul, und darum bekamen sie oft Schläge und wenig Lohn und wurden nun neidisch auf Aschenbrödel, da sie sahen, daß es ihm besser ging.
