Jason Walter has managed to live a seemingly simple life. He goes to work, he pays his bills, he loves his family. Everything is turned upside down, however, when he loses his job and runs into a strange girl, leading to a joy ride and an epic adventure of true mania.
In a kingdom where loyalty is currency and betrayal runs in bloodlines, General Kain Villairo stands as both savior and stranger. Torn from his family at age eleven and thrust into the royal army, he rises to become the youngest commander in Kairum's history at seventeen. But behind his meteoric ascent lies a legacy of pain: he is the son of the kingdom's most notorious traitor, yet finds unlikely favor with King Alastor himself. As revolution ignites in the outer villages, Kain must confront more than just enemy forces. Across the battlefield stands Bruce, the twin brother he thought lost forever. Now, as brothers clash in a kingdom divided, Kain faces an impossible choice between the power he's gained and the family he lost. Debut author Joey Oliver weaves a masterful tale of brotherhood torn apart by civil war, drawing inspiration from historical accounts of brothers who fought on opposite sides during the American Civil War. Through Kain's journey, Oliver explores the raw edges of trauma, the price of loyalty, and the brutal choices demanded by war. This gripping fantasy debut asks the ultimate question: When the walls close in and everything you've built hangs in the balance, do you choose the crown you serve or the blood you share? In the end, some wounds can only be healed by the very thing that caused them-family. About the Author>The seed for "The Gray Lion" was planted during his college years when he encountered a haunting historical account of brothers fighting on opposite sides of the American Civil War. This spark of inspiration, combined with his architectural background in studying how structures of power and beauty are built (and sometimes fall), led to the creation of his debut novel. Oliver's unique perspective has been shaped by his transcontinental moves-from the Pacific Northwest to New Jersey's urban landscape, and finally to Austin, Texas, where he currently works in real estate development. His background in architecture and construction lends authenticity to his world-building, while his experience in multiple American subcultures enriches his character development.
