Johannes Ewald, der ofte kaldes subjektivismens grundlægger, skrev i 1774-78 denne indre selvbiografi for at bidrage så meget som muligt til ”kundskaben om det menneskelige hjerte”. Udvalgte digte af Johannes Ewald.**Johannes Ewald, 18.11.1743-17.3.1781, dansk digter, i sin egen tid anerkendt som Danmarks førende lyriker og dramatiker...Uanset hvilken genre Ewald digtede i, fornyede han den indefra...Ewald er vores første moderne digter...Højdepunktet i Johannes Ewalds lyrik er imidlertid hans oder, der sammenfatter inspirationer fra den klassiske (Pindar, Horats) og den nyklassiske odedigtning (Klopstock, James Thomson, Edward Young) i en storslået refleksionslyrik. Mest berømt er "Rungsteds Lyksaligheder. En Ode" (1772), der er en ekstatisk skabelseshymne, hvori han priser kunstens befriende kraft.Med samme intense koncentration skrev han en række tankedigte, hvoraf især "Haab og Erindring" (1772) og "Til Sielen. En Ode" (1780) står som højdepunkter i dansk lyrik. Elementer herfra anvendte han i en række pietistiske digte fra slutningen af 1770'erne, der bearbejder de allerede anslåede temaer i nye retninger. Hovedværket, den selvbiografiske roman Levnet og Meeninger, skrev han 1774-78 (trykt 1804-08). Den er angiveligt en selvbekendelse; men han underminerer genrens fromhed med skeptisk romanlitteratur. Miguel de Cervantes Saavedras Don Quixote (1605, 1615) og Laurence Sternes Life and Opinions of Tristram Shandy, Gentleman (1759-67) er de to vigtigste inspirationskilder; men også Daniel Defoe, Henry Fielding og François de Voltaire er blandt Ewalds foretrukne forfattere.Levnet og Meeninger låner træk fra både syndsbekendelse, selvbiografi og roman. Han bruger her — ironisk og parodisk — alle tre genrer uden at lægge sig fast på én model. Manuskriptet skildrer et romanagtigt liv. Det handler om en ung person, der ikke vil affinde sig med en borgerlig tilværelse. Overalt søger han det normbrydende. Ud af ungdommens drømme væver den voksne, indsigtsfulde fortæller værkets forfinede tekst vel vidende, at kun i kunstværket kan de gamle drømme lyse med usvækket glans.Den berømte kærlighedshistorie mellem ham og Arendse Huulegaard handler derfor ikke om at besidde hende i virkeligheden. "Min Arendse" er først og fremmest et billede i ord, der skal fastholde de første overraskende, sublime indtryk. Ewald søger nemlig overalt det pludselige frem for det tilvante. Johannes Ewald er ophavsmanden til den danske royale nationalmelodi "Kong Christian stod ved højen Mast" fra 1779.

Odins søn Balder dræbes som bekendt, af en pil fra planten mistelten - derefter vender han tilbage til dødsriget. Om denne mytologiske fortælling er der skrevet og digtet mangt og meget, men Ewalds "Balders død" er dog noget af det mest eminente.
