Table of Contents Introduction Depending on Others Getting to Be an Achiever Success Stories Financial Support and Independence Types of Dependence Role of parents In Self-Reliance Learning Self-Reliance - the Hard Way Conclusion Author Bio Publisher Introduction There is a great difference between self-confidence and self-reliance. Self-confidence is something you have in yourself. It is a part of your personality. Your elders may consider it to be insolence, arrogance, and even impudence! But self-confidence is the ability of a person to think that he is capable of doing something because he knows he is mentally, physically, spiritually, and emotionally proficient and skilled enough to achieve that particular end or goal. On the other hand self-reliance means using your own abilities and resources without seeking any assistance from others. Naturally, you will have to have lots of self confidence in yourself, in order to become self-reliant! A self-reliant person rises in stature, both in his own eyes than in the eyes of the people around him. He commands respect. If you have parents who encourage you from childhood to develop a sense of self-worth, you are going to emerge as a person with a continuous interest in life when you are an adult, be able to face lots of challenges and overcome them and have a passion kindled for success.
Rats For Kids Table of Contents Introduction What is a rat? What kinds of rats are there? Where do rats live? The history of rats and humans What is a brown rat? What is a black rat? What is a lab rat? What kinds of lab rats are there? What is a fancy rat and what kinds are there? Conclusion Author Bio Introduction Rats are some of the most adaptable creatures in the world. It seems like everyone hates them, but they really are interesting and have contributed a lot to science and made good companions for people. So, are rats all bad? Easy answer, no. But that depends on what type of rat they are, and there are many that should be avoided. Like any animal, some rats are friendly, and others are nasty. But the rat is an enduring character, inspiring writers from Brian Jacques of the Redwall series and E. B. White in Charlotte's Web to cast them as nasty, icky villains or at least as unsavory characters. But then again, sometimes rats are portrayed as good characters, such as in Pixar's Ratatouille. In the end, a rat is simply an animal looking for food and shelter.
The Beginner's Guide to Houseplants Easy Tips and Techniques for Growing Houseplants in Your Home Table of Contents Introduction How to Choose Houseplants Temperature Humidity Different Types of Containers Light Watering your plants Rule of hand Watering Tips Going for a long holiday - What about my indoor plants? Feeding Your Plants Re-potting a plant What Is the Best Potting Mixture Training and Pruning Your Plants Cleaning Your Plants Common pests and their treatment Appendix Index of common names and botanical names of popular houseplants. Author Bio Introduction Millenniums ago, a man deciding to build a garden was fortunate because he had all that land right outside his door. All he had to do is clear out a piece of land, and mark it with a boundary wall. After that, he could go hunting for attractive looking plants in the wild, and bring them back home. With a little bit of care and cherishing, he would soon have a tame garden of his own. But today, a large number of us are not so fortunate. Space is at a premium. Concrete jungles have taken the place of what was once nature's backyard. And that is why man is looking for easy options to bring beautiful greenery inside his limited space. And so this book is for all those, who want to know more about indoor plants, how to grow them, how to take care of them, which are the best plant varieties which flourish indoors and tips and techniques with which you can enjoy not only a relaxing hobby, but also greenery around you. Until just after the Second World War, indoor household plants were limited to ferns, palms, and potted plants, which flowered in season. Surely plants like aspidistras were also popular for interior decoration but soon more and more wide-ranging varieties and species of foliage parted plants began to be known to keen gardeners. This change is due chiefly to the architects who designed postwar buildings on severe lines. Gone were the rambling houses with huge gardens. Strictly utilitarian designs were utilized by architects to design these houses and flats. Frankly speaking most of them were chicken coops. The introduction of houseplants in a large variety of colors and fonts provided a flash of color to those austere and severe designs. You could relieve the simplicity and the austerity of the home by growing houseplants indoors. Thanks to the improved heating and lighting systems, many varieties which were once grown in hot houses, greenhouses and conservatories would now flourish indoors as houseplants. There are many plants which are easier to grow, and last for several years.

The instinct of beautifying one's house and surroundings and also one's clothes is innate in a human being. And that is why traditional designs incorporated designs, including natural symbols and figures like flowers, animals, leaves, and birds, through needle and thread on a base. Women used fishhooks and ivory needles 5000 years ago with fiber from plants like cotton thread, jute thread, and even silk thread. Even today, natural fibers are used for embroidery including silk. We do not know which particular civilization where and how long ago decided to embellish the garments one wore with embroidery. But we do know that ancient civilizations more than 5000 years ago had experts in the art of needle and thread and their families, and these housewives were proud to demonstrate their creative abilities to everyone who came to visit and admire. When the Spaniards conquered the Philippines, - 1521 to 1799- they wanted to show the natives that they were the conquerors and that is why they ordered them to wear their traditional shirt- Canga untucked in their loin cloths -bahags. The Filipinos in order to show that they were not conquered decorated these shirts with such exquisite embroidery, that each shirt worn became an admirable barong tagalog. When I was young, I had a number of these sent to me by my aunt in the Philippines, - shirts for ladies - which I wore when at college to the great admiration of all my fellow classmates. You can look at some of the examples in the Appendix and throughout the book. Each of them took anywhere between one and a half years to 3 years to make by hand by my skilled artisan friends through state aided societies for the upliftment of women.. They are now being sold all over the world through nonprofit organizations and the money going straight to the women. Traditionally, any surface which was present and visible would be embroidered upon and embellished with patterns. So this book is going to tell you all about how you can learn the traditional art of hand embroidery. After that you can try your hand at your own designs.

Children, in particular, tend to crave this vehicle of expression as they go through the artistic stages: scribbling, pre-schematic, schematic, and visual realism. Each stage is vital to the child's development, and artistic expression should be encouraged as much as possible. Parents and teachers sometimes stifle this creative side of children by not providing opportunities for artistic expression. It is sometimes due to their lack of knowledge or fear of the subject. This book will highlight ten art topics that can be used at home or in the classroom to encourage artistic expressions and spark creativity in children and interested adults.

Goats and humans What do goats eat? Goats and their appearances How do goats act? Pygmy Goats Australian Goats Boer Goats American LaMancha Goats Dwarf Goats Landrace Goats Alpine Goats Angora Goats Cashmere Goats Mountain Goats Conclusion Author Bio Introduction Did you know that goats won't eat just anything? They're actually very picky eaters. This is in spite of many sources showing them eating everything from homework to tin cans. Goats are very interesting creatures; they have been domesticated (herded and raised by humans) for longer than people have had a written language. Goats aren't a bit part of modern day life for most people, but they have long been a source of food, clothing, and other goods for people the world over. Goats are good for milk, fibers (to make fabric out of), skin, meat, and their horns. They are similar to sheep in a lot of their uses to humans, and it's no wonder, because they're cousins. Domestic animals include dogs, cows, sheep, cats, and horses; the goat is one of many. However, they are unique among their fellow domestic animals in many ways.
Table of Contents Introduction Hidden Hunger Explained The Importance of Micronutrients Iodine deficiency Vitamin A Deficiency Choosing the Best Diet Fortified Foods Preventing Micronutrient Deficiency Conclusion Author Bio Publisher Introduction You consider yourself to be a very health conscious person, eating the right foodstuffs, at the right time. However, you have been noticing of late that you get tired easily. You are pale, and feel that subject. You do not feel hungry, very often. You may also suffer from giddiness. By evening, you're so tired that you have absolutely no patience and inclination to be nice to the rest of the family and you snap at them at the slightest procreation! Naturally the family is at a loss to understand your unusual behavior. On the other hand, let's take the example of your once happy go lucky teenager. One evening, while playing basketball, she felt dizzy and fell down. Also, her grades which were quite good, in the past have started falling down because according to her she cannot concentrate. Her attention span has shortened considerably. She is very easily distracted, much more than what is normally in a normal teenager! Both of these examples may be unrelated, but the underlying reason for both of them is the same. You as well as your teenager are suffering from what is normally called "hidden hunger." This is not an eating disorder, which is self-inflicted, like bulimia or anorexia. This is micronutrient deficiency. This is one of the most important and worrisome of all the public health problems all over the world today. Did you know that 47% of the people, even in well-developed nations are suffering from this micronutrient deficiency? You may tell yourself, how can that be, you have been eating well and you have been eating often. But what have you been eating? Processed foods? Foods which have been treated in such a manner that all the micronutrients have been removed beforehand, and other supporting additives being placed in those foods instead? Many of the foods which we eat today are lacking in the essential minerals and vitamins, which are necessary to keep the body functioning properly. These micronutrients include iodine, zinc, iron, and vitamin A.
Table of Contents Introduction Celery Seed sowing Trench Growing Knowing More about Earthing up Onions Spinach Summer Spinach Winter Spinach Leeks Asparagus Preparing Your Asparagus Bed Conclusion Author Bio Publisher Introduction Deep-rooted vegetables have been grown by gardeners for millenniums, because they know that there is going to be a next advantage of having a deep-rooted vegetables' harvest. Not only is it going to be bountiful, but the treatment done to the soil during this growing process is going to enrich it manifold. Deep-rooted vegetables improve the soil as special preparation has to be made for them. That means you have to go in for the cultivation except for spinach. Celery, onions and leeks need well-prepared ground and asparagus and rhubarb are permanent crops. That means these are going to be your main crops interspersed with short-term crops like spinach, - between different main crop sowings- which are going to be harvested from your land every year. Spinach is thus called a "catch" crop. This book is going to give you information on how best you can utilize the ground around you to grow organic vegetables for your family and also possibly for the organic market in your city. Remember for millenniums people have been using traditional organic farming methods for growing their vegetables. So it is time to come back to nature and say goodbye to artificial fertilizers and harmful chemical pesticides.
Grandma's Natural Remedies and Ancient Herbal Beauty Recipes Table of Contents Introduction Monday's Child Is Fair of Face The Healing Power of Infused Oil Remedies for winter- Chilblains Sciatica Stiff Joints... Quit your Bellyachin'! Simple Perfumed Ointments Natural Cures For Summer Ailments Appendix Introduction A couple of years ago, somebody asked me what made me so interested in herbal remedies and natural cures as well as natural beauty recipes? That is when I told him that the wisdom of the ancients had not been garnered together, and would be lost as the generations forgot about asking their old wise ancestors, the Lore which they knew. So I was seven years old, when I decided to myself that I needed to know everything about what my grandmother had learned from her grandmother. And I started writing those ancient natural remedies and beauty recipes down. More than three decades later, I started writing books on natural remedies and natural herbal recipes, which I collected, whenever I went around the countryside. People used to go around looking at the places to visit; I used to go around asking for the oldies of the village who would give me herbal remedies and recipes. In around 30 years, I collected thousands of these recipes, which were and are still being used by villagers and townsfolk and which have been given to them down the ages. And they work, because all the ingredients are natural. And also, the genetic makeup of hard-working people living in an unpolluted atmosphere helped in keeping them healthy. So they did not have to go running to a doctor whenever they caught a sniffle. They knew the easiest herbal tisane in which would put them straight in a couple of days. Now, I spent my childhood and youth in jungles as well as in remote areas in all corners of the compass, where nobody believed in medicines, - and sometimes medical access for serious cases was able only through air lifting by a helicopter - but everybody believed in the power of nature and her curative properties. Also, plenty of exercise, a good and healthy diet and grandma's natural remedies kept us healthy and happy. And the funny thing is that the only times we got sick with measles, mumps, and chickenpox was when we came down from the mountains to the cities and the towns during our annual vacations. The moment we got back into the healthy atmosphere of the mountains, with plenty of fresh air, plenty of fruit and drink and plenty of opportunities to create lots of childish mischief and mayhem, we were content and happy children again. We never knew that there were medicines which you needed to pop to keep healthy. Is not this the natural trend of the 21st century "civilized" person? You have lost your faith in natural remedies to keep you healthy. You would rather buy something expensive, which is being endorsed by your favorite star. I am certain she never uses that medicine herself, because it is made up of chemicals. These chemicals are going to have a harmful after effect on your body. The first thing you do when you wake up is take some vitamins with your breakfast. After that, you take some vitamins or pills to pep you up. Then you take the medicines prescribed to you by a doctor. Count the times you take some sort of medicine in the shape of a pill, vitamin, and drug throughout the day. And then can you believe someone who has not been to see a doctor for the last 30 years? There are plenty of octogenarians in our area who believe in natural remedies and good diets to keep them healthy. They are all grandpas and grandmas. They do not coddle themselves with pills and medicines.

Furthermore, that will potentially create problems for you in an already tough situation. In this section, we cover the basics all the way to creating a makeshift toilet. The next section brings us to the issue of food. Here we give you all the do's and don'ts regarding food supplies. We tell you what foods you have to rely upon and those that you should avoid and keep at bay. Water, although more key in importance, comes after food in our book and after explaining its relevance, we will tell you all the different ways in which you can purify unclean sources for use. We follow it up with general advice with what steps to take during and after the blackout and sum it all up in a conclusion for you. Herb Storing Using Herbs Herbal tips Bouquet Garni Omelette aux herbes fines Making Herb Tea Conclusion Author Bio Introduction I have already written about how to make a herb garden in another gardening book- How to make a Herb Garden - in our Gardening series, but the gardener cum herbalist is going to get an even more extensive knowledge about how to make a full-fledged herbal garden in this book. Perfumes, juices, oils and other products extracted from seeds, leaves, shoots, and bark of the herbs have been used since the earliest times in religious ceremonies, and in cooking. Magicians used them in making mysterious potions to impress the credulous public. Herb essential oils along with parts of herbs have long been in use down the millenniums to make natural beauty products. The oracles of Delphi were women who had been "intoxicated" on fumes of deadly nightshade, which would make them hallucinate. And then with bay leaves in their mouths-these leaves were considered sacred to Apollo - they used to predict the future. No wonder not many could understand them or interpret their sayings. So each hearer chose the one which suited his requirements the best, and believed the Gods had spoken. Today, these herbs are usually grown for their great value in cooking. That is why it is well worth finding a small place for herbs in any garden. The 21st century world is also slowly and steadily getting back to the idea that the herbal remedies, which were used in alternative medicine in ancient civilizations of the East and West had curative properties. The Egyptians, Babylonians, Chinese, Mayans, Aztecs, Greek and other knowledgeable people all over the world used these herbs, and derived all the healthy benefits of them as often as they could.

Baking was just not restricted to making bread; you made biscuits, patties, pancakes, cakes, pies, and anything you wished with some oil, flour, eggs, milk and other healthy ingredients made up into a batter. After that, you just put it in a pan, put it in the oven, and allowed the heat to work its magic. Many of the baking recipes being used in grandma's time, - and even before her time - have been passed down through the ages for generations. Not only were they tested and proven and eaten regularly, they were for the most part simple and yet unusual. In nearly all of them, the only ingredients needed were basic items which grandma kept on hand at all times. The modern-day bakery with its wide selection of readymade cakes and pastries and also food manufacturers, turning out new package mixes and delicious frozen delicacies have taken much of the fun out of home baking. So is it a surprise that not many youngsters of the coming generations bother much about learning how to cook, especially baking. That is because all these ready-made goods are wonderfully convenient and inviting, but most homemakers still enjoy home baking, now and then, when they have the time, energy and inclination. So it does not matter whether you are an experienced home Baker or just a newbie starting out to learn the really interesting new activity of home baking - this book is going to give you plenty of tips and techniques, where you can take full advantage of improved ingredients, reliable recipes, laborsaving appliances and controlled temperature equipment to help you bake that perfect cake. Each time, every time. That means you can have your cake and eat it too.

The furniture, the curtains and all the decorative ornaments have been put in place. However, there is something missing, which could enhance the aesthetic beauty of your house. This is possibly an aquarium. Ornamental fish keeping has become a multimillion dollar modern-day art and business. Everyone wants to enjoy the beauty of exotic fish as well as attractive water plants. In fact, many doctors prescribe keeping aquariums in the houses of their stressed-out patients, so that they can look at the calm and tranquil movements of the fish moving about in their aquatic abode and thus relax. Once upon a time, aquariums were used to decorate the entrance of houses. However, nowadays, this business has grown from $8.9 billion in 2012 with an annual growth of 10% per annum! The USA is the largest market in the world of ornamental fish, importing fish worth $500 million each year, followed by the European Union and then Japan. When I was a youngster, father being the DIY type built an aquarium and stocked it with goldfish, neon tetras, Veil-tails and black Mollies. These were the only fish varieties available in the city at that time because nobody knew much about aquariums or fishes as pets/drawing room ornamentations. Nevertheless, people came, people saw, people admired, and people wanted. Within a month the whole neighborhood had aquariums and had begun to vie with each other to get more and more exotic and possibly expensive stock. And most of these experiments failed, because these people did not know much about aquarium care and fish care. This book is going to give you that basic information, so that you can choose your fish varieties, care for them, and even have an interesting long time hobby which relaxes and entertains you.
Table of Contents Introduction Stress in Children What are we doing to our children? Positive and Negative Stress Knowledge Overload Psychosocial Stress Tips to Deal with Psychosocial Stress Odious Comparisons Subconscious Pressurization Children and Aptitude Conclusion Author Bio Publisher Introduction Since time immemorial, our parents have been our first friends, philosophers, guides, and caretakers. They have been our support and they have been the first medium to give us knowledge and encouragement. This book is all about the role of parents in shaping your destiny, especially when they play the part of your advisor, teacher and guide. On the other hand, this encouragement can become quite claustrophobic and pushing, especially when the parents are overly ambitious. A parent with a laissez-faire attitude who does not bother to discipline our guide his or her child is at one end of the scale. Along with him is the parent who in calculates negativism in his kids. On the other end of the scale is that one track minded parent who is living his life wholly through his children, and whose main ambition is to make a Superman and a Superwoman out of his very ordinary normal little child. Naturally, this is going to cause plenty of stress in the child, because he is going to try to live up to the expectations of the parents. Many times an over demanding parent has big plans for his firstborn, especially if he is a boy. The son is either going to carry on in his father's footsteps, or he is going to be a trail Buster with his parents behind him. Let me give you one clear example of one of these overtly ambitious parents. Martina Hinges' mother wanted to make a tennis player out of her daughter from day go itself. That is why the child was named Martina, after Martina Navratilova. That child was not allowed to do any other activity which would take her away from her regular tennis practice. Today Martina Hinges has retired from match early from professional tennis because of numerous injuries. I wonder what her family life is like, with her mother, harping about the sacrifices she made in order to make her daughter a world-class level tennis player. How many sacrifices on the altar of parental ambitions are suffering quietly out there? I know about many parents, who have decided that their children are going to be outstanding All- rounders and a pride to their parents. With avid zeal, I have seen these parents driven from one academic class and extracurricular activity to another. In this process, the children are being driven around the bend, trying to keep up with their parent's expectations of them.

When we are planting them by seeds, we will have to plant them either straight into the earth, outdoors, or in containers and in pots beforehand whether they can grow up into seedlings. The seedlings are then going to be transplanted into their permanent positions when they have reached a height of about 4 to 5 inches.
Controlling Child Obesity - Keeping Your Children Healthy Table of Contents Introduction Reasons for obesity Side effects of Childhood Obesity Does Your Child Have a Genuine Weight Problem? How to prevent Obesity in Your Child Healthy Convenience Food Options Homemade Burger Patties Homemade chicken Nuggets Chips Ice cream Conclusion Publisher Introduction Did you know that in the last 30 years, the childhood obesity cases in children have more than doubled and more than quadrupled, in teenagers and adolescents, in the USA alone? 7% of children were considered to be obese in 1980. In 2012, that percentage had increased to 18%. In the same manner, teenage obesity had increased from 5% to 21% in that particular time period. What is the difference between obesity and overweight? Overweight means that our body has extra body weight, due to water, bone, fat, muscle, or any of these combined factors for a particular and given height. On the other hand, obesity is concerned with just extra body fat. Millennium ago, the idea of children being obese was a rather rare phenomenon. They may have been overweight, because of lack of physical exercise and eating lots of food indiscriminately. But they were not obese, because they were not genetically conditioned to be so. Also, sedentary lifestyles at that time was not encouraged in children because, since childhood, they were trained to do hard physical labor, which they would continue for the rest of their lives. In many parts of the world, there are still societies which equate being fat and well-rounded with being prosperous. That is the reason why even now, mothers still stuff up their children, with lots and lots of food, so that people do not blame them for "starving their children" because they are so thin. How did this attitude of society come into being? We have to go back millenniums ago, when man was still struggling to survive. That is when it was not so easy for him to get enough of food to feed his large family. This is the reason why plenty of his children stayed hungry unless they could forage for themselves. It was only in a comparatively prosperous family, that they could get enough of food to eat, in order to get "fat." That is when fat became synonymous with prosperity. Kings and emperors were never shown to be lean, slim and thin, unless they were warriors and were in battle worthy conditions, in wall paintings or rock carvings. They had this bit of a paunch. This was to show that they had enough of food to eat and to eat heartily, so that they could get fat.

So, is it a wonder that when these delicious and pompous birds reached the shores of Europe in the 16th century, thanks to the traders in West Indies and Spain, they were immediately added to exotic and popular fare. And since then, a turkey dinner, especially on Thanksgiving and on Christmas was soon a part of the social fabric. Turkeys may not be eaten as often as you eat chicken, but you can always have them for Turkey sandwiches. Turkish traders and merchants brought them to Europe by ship, and that is why the name "turkey" became synonymous with this unusually funny looking and self-important birds strutting about in your backyard. Once upon a time there were also called the Indian fowl. I was under the impression that that was because the Native Americans were called Indians at that time. They knew the value of this bird and hunted it regularly. That was until I found out that the "Indian" part of the name came from the European tendency of naming exotic birds, with the names of exotic lands. So the Catalans called it Gall d'inde and the French also called it Poulet d'inde meaning fowl from India. In Hebrew, it is called Tarnegol Hodu - rooster of India. And the irony is that in Turkey, it is called Hindi which means related to India! In reality, Indians of India did not know about this bird until the Britishers brought it to India for their turkey dinners in the late 18th and 19th century. But these are native birds living for millenniums in the North American continent. Wild turkeys also known to the first settlers as "gobblers" soon became a part of the dining table, and the Puritans must have been really surprised at such a show of pomp and colorful splendor in a gobbler.
Table of Contents Introduction Making Your Garden Tips when planting trees and Shrubs Planning Your Garden PH value Flowering Plants Conifers, Cypress And Firs Willows and Maples Conclusion Author Bio Publisher Introduction A main garden can either be in the front of your house or at the back of your house - wherever you have some space. It does not matter how large your house is; the main garden is usually going to take up the empty part of the whole building lot or plot. Your backyard may be your main garden, with exotic flowers and trees. In the same way, your front garden is going to be the most attractive landscaping feature which is going to welcome all the visitors with a smile. That is the reason why front gardens in comparison to main gardens do not normally have large trees taking up all the area. Unless of course you are very fond of conifers and cannot do without them. Remember that the front garden is going to be your visiting card. This is going to give your visitor a first-hand impression about you, your tastes, your personality and also whether your house is welcoming or is it just a bleak, dour, Gothic magnificent construction with absolutely no sign of welcome around it? And after that you are going to take your visitors to see your main garden which you have made with a lot of care, effort and pride. All of us know that a majority of us are instinctively nature loving however much circumstances have made us citified. Most of us wish to go back to the wide open spaces, the woods and above all, any place where it is green, nice, and soothing. The instinct to have your own plot of land is innate and once you have that bit of plot, the first thing that you are going to do is make a roof for yourself and your family, and then look at the rest of the space in which you can plant things. This instinct to see things grow, especially through your own effort is one of the natural instincts inherent in man. So if you find yourself getting resigned to a paradise of bricks and mortar and pollution, isn't it time that you should escape and live amid blossoms, greenery and the fresh air. For millenniums, one has known and understood this cliché - everything you really desire can always be obtained. But to obtain that precious goal is going to take a little bit of effort. So that means you need to do a little bit of early planning, and work with a continuous dedication.
