That was a little step for her, but it was a giant step for mankind. Soon people began to preserve food in stoneware jars. The principle of preserving these fruit/food items depended firstly upon the destruction by need of all the mold and bacteria in the air, fruit, or water. As technological development and experimental sciences began to develop in ancient civilizations, they discovered how to make glass containers and bottles more than 5000 years ago. Naturally, at the same time, the cook in the kitchen was experimenting on food stuffs. It was only by trial and error that she learned that if she kept items of food in a moist atmosphere, it would soon grow moldy and perish real fast. Also, she learned that the exclusion of air during the sealing off the bottles prevented this mold from growing on the surface of the food. Along with that, she found out that salt, vinegar, wine and oil were extremely useful mediums in which she could preserve food, and that is how the art of been a preserving food in the shape of jams, jellies, pickles and chutneys came into existence. So this art has come down to us through the ages, and that is why many families have closely guarded secret recipes for pickling or preserving food. And that is when our grannies told us in grave tones - "remember, children, the containers in which you put this jam should be totally sealed really properly. That is how you are going to keep it for a long time." Natural vinegar and natural oil was used as an important medium since ancient times to preserve fruit, pickles and other natural food items. Along with that, salt and sugar were used as preservatives.

There were hundreds of ways which were used to make fire out of almost nowhere, and they fulfilled some of those elementary purposes for which fire is used, even today. We are least likely to come across situations and circumstances that our stone-aged ancestors faced, where they were required to make fire to survive. Nevertheless, the tools and technologies that today's sophisticated and highly advanced world has brought to us are useful only when they are within access. You will need knowledge, skills, educated ideas, and some basic tools to start a fire when you are stuck in a far-flung island all by yourself. All you need is a tall flame to make yourself noticed and be located. You will need these skills when you are staying overnight in a zone you chose to chase game if you forget to bring matches or a lighter to start fire, which could keep you warm and prevent wild animals from coming near. The link between man and fire traces back to the ages when one of the very first human creatures, or something close to that, landed on this earth. This primal relationship between human and fire highlights the importance of fire and how pivotal a role its existence plays in our survival. From cooking to heating and from signaling to repelling predators, fire has been one of the primary ingredients of the basic human survival toolkit. Interestingly, the mythological and spiritual part of fire in various religions or cults of the world also dates back to primitive ages. It can also be assumed that men understood fire and its utility in different ways, which mainly evolved from their experiences with it. Thanks to our ancestors who developed the ability to use fire in several ways and transferred this ability, each generation has only added more value to the application of fire. Without knowing about anthropology, one can safely say that this skill required memory, analysis, and future planning - the traits that separated us from our earliest ancestors. Since then, fire has done nothing but facilitated us and provided us with an easier life. For example, generating the power that runs my PC, heating your home, or running some artillery that protects usare ways we enjoy an easier life. The more sophisticated and advanced form of fire utility, like industrial or military use, brings a plethora of advantages and disadvantages on the table to debate about. However, we shall focus on some of the most commonly used and essential applications of fire such as methods of setting up fire with limited quirky tools in unseen situations.

Nearly most vegetables and crops are grown on lands, that are intensively cropped. That means one or more cultivated crops are grown on the land each year, and the crop residues are not sufficient to replace the organic matter lost manually. In ancient times, it was the norm of a farmer to make sure that the land was fertilized with plenty of organic material and manure in order to provide nutrition to the soil, which had been depleted through a previous harvest. This was naturally the traditional method which was followed all down the ages, all over the world. People knew that the land gave enough of itself in order to produce your crops for you. But the land had to be fed. And this feeding was done with organic fertilizer, water, and other natural resources. At that time, nobody knew that there were plenty of helpful microorganisms present in the land, which were helping in the decomposition of the organic material in order to produce nutrients for the soil. The loss of organic matter was due to the action of these particular microorganisms which were decomposing it ultimately to produce carbon dioxide. The rate of the loss depended on the soil type, muster, temperature, and the type of the crop grown on that particular land. The microorganisms needed both water, therefore their growth, and continued happy action. The rate of the decomposition was slow in the dry soil.

The Wonderful World of Birds - How to Make Friends With Our Feathered Friends Table of Contents Introduction Knowing More about the Birds around You - Fun Facts of the More Common Bird Species Blackbirds Sparrows Hawks Cranes Goldfinch Ducks Blue Jays Chickadees Egrets Vultures Falcons Gulls Finches Owls The Territorial Rights of Birds How to Make Bird Houses Different Styles of Bird Houses Special Birdhouse Plans for Different Bird Species Taking Care of Your Bird Pets Feeding Your Feathered Friends Starting A Bird Watching Club Conclusion Introduction Did you know that some of the birds which people believed would never ever be extinct because they were so numerous have disappeared in the 20th and the 21st century? The last passenger pigeon, which once covered the skies of North America, died in captivity in 1904. In the same manner, it took just five years to kill off all the vultures, the Kites, the Eagles and the house sparrow (Passer Domesticus) and many other birds once common in cities, in parts of the Indian subcontinent. Blame it all on pesticides and also humans encroaching the natural habitats of birds. So why should you be interested in the wonderful world of birds, you may ask? Well, it is a well-known fact that a number of bird species are disappearing from the face of the earth, just like the Great Auk and the dodo at the rate of 10- 25 per year. So what, you may say, after all, there are so many other birds to choose from. Just calculate. 25 species going extinct per year, never to make their appearance on earth again. At this rate, we are not going to see a living bird in the next 50 to 75 years. That is reality. There may come a generation, which may ask its grandparents, "what were those silly little creatures, you called birds? We can just hear their songs on audio. What were they like to look at?" And the grandparents trying desperately to describe the magic world of birds. Imagine a world without nightingales singing in Berkeley Square, bluebirds flying over the white cliffs of Dover, peacocks in purple adorning and other such songbirds disappearing from your windowsill, garden and lives. Imagine no bird nesting in your garden or waking you up to birdsong, bright and early in the morning. So if you begin to take an interest in birds, there is a chance that you may want to help save them and your children might grow up to be keen ornithologists.

According to ancient treatises, the pomegranate had the power to purify your blood, which would mean that your skin would not suffer from any sort of skin ailments, including pimples or boils. Also, when I was talking about pomegranates, with an ancient naturopath, he told me that sages of ancient time used to use pomegranate seeds to enhance brain power and vision, get rid of odema, renew the mineral resources needed for keeping our body working properly and reduce urinary inconsistency. In fact, he handed me some pomegranate seeds, mixed up with rock salt, to make me feel hungry. Making Coconut Cream at Home Making Desi Ghee at Home Conclusion Author Bio Introduction They tell a story about some extremely avid treasure hunters in the Caribbean about 20 years ago. They managed to get a treasure map about a buried treasure box, buried 400 years ago by some shipwrecked sailors, and with dreams and visions of gold coins and jewels and other precious stones, they began digging at night in all secrecy. In two hours, they struck a box of wood, and they dragged it out. They opened it and plunged their hands in only to find the box full of peppercorns. Those peppercorns had grown moldy, underground, because they had not been dried in the sun. So there were treasure hunters with a moldy smelling sneeze, making powder, which once would have commanded a King's ransom. 400 years ago, this treasure would have been priceless. Today, like other spices, it is universally available all over the globe and anybody considering pepper priceless, like his ancestors used to do is either living in a remote area with no access to a grocery store or mall or does not know about pepper. So, for all those people want to know all about why this spice was considered to be the best ransom for kings and emperors, by Roman conquerors, here is a bit about its history. The pepper is supposed to have originated in the South of India, especially in the Tamil Nadu region where it was called pippali. In ancient times, the ships loaded with peppercorns were collected from areas like Tuticorin, Chettinad, Madurai, the Malabar coast in Kerala and Kanya Kumari (Cape Comorin) and sent all over the globe. Of course, the Romans considered this to be a great addition to their cuisine, and even Pliny the great historian of ancient times made sure that he spoke awarded pepper in his gastronomical delicacies gathered for posterity. He was dismayed with the fact that India drained the Roman Empire of 50 million sesterces every year with her different spices, of which pepper played a very prominent role. Black pepper, which is commonly called as Millagu in the local Tamil vernacular, was of course an integral part of all the cuisines of this area. So they tell a tale about a Tamil cook having to feed a hungry British officer. So he mixed up pepper and water, and made mulligan tanni-literally pepper water, which has been immortalized as mulligatawny in Anglo-Indian cuisine. Pepper was introduced to South Asia somewhere around about 4000 years ago, when it started to be cultivated extensively in Indonesia, Borneo, Java and Sumatra. The word pep comes from adding the missing zing or pepper to your spirit, so when pep talks are peppered with lots of moralizing and lecturing, they can spice up the proceedings really well. Many of the wars in the medieval times in Europe were caused to gain complete power and access to the trade routes to India. That is why, the Dutch, the Portuguese, and the British kept asking their soldiers and navigators and explorers to look for easier ways to get access to shipping routes to places where they could get spices. It is said that when Vasco da Gama reached Calicuta, the traders asked him what he was looking for. "Christians and spices." was his answer. He started up the trade route for Portugal to India, but that soon was taken over by the British.

Table of Contents Introduction So What Is Faith? God Men and Men of God Conclusion Author Bio Publisher Introduction This book is for all those people who have begun to think deeply about spirituality, faith, the power of good, and also the belief in One Supreme Being. This book is definitely not about religion, or any of religious principles that you follow. Consider this book to be something like an allegory, parable, or a fairytale. Instead, it is going to talk about faith as a whole, which is seen through an ordinary person like I, and also beliefs, coming down through the ages about good and evil, right and wrong, and other such spiritual matters. Along with that, you are going to get to know something about Men of God, and God men, as seen through the eyes of a simple human being like I. A friend of mine once asked me the religion I followed. I blinked my eyes, and said half seriously, because discussions on religion bore me, that I was a pagan, like those in ancient Rome. I had no fixed God, and worshiped what ever came in my way, whenever I felt like it.
An Introduction to Roman Catholicism Table of Contents Introduction Essentials Chapter 1: The Creed Chapter 2: Sacraments Chapter 3: Catholic Traditions Conclusion Glossary of Terms Author Bio Publisher Introduction The purpose of this text is to present and defend the fundamental beliefs of the Roman Catholic faith from a Catholic perspective with an inviting and surprisingly affordable format. Many people harbor gross misunderstandings of the Catholic religion due to misinformation and, more likely than not, a total misunderstanding of Catholic institutions and practices. How and why an institution that has had as dramatic a role in the development of western civilization as the Catholic Church has come to be so entirely misunderstood and mischaracterized by non-Catholics is beyond the scope of this text. My hope is that this text dispels insubstantial notions held about the Catholic faith and replaces them with the factual information. This text is a necessary corrective because it is difficult to articulate the motions and practices of faith to others, especially if the others are aggressive and non-receptive (which is often the tone during interreligious dialogue). Faith is often an organic and fluid motion on the part of the faithful. Faith is a lived experience, hence the phrase "the life of faith." The core beliefs of the Catholic faith are presented here in a manner accessible to Christians and non-Christians alike. I hope you approach this book with a spirit of open-mindedness and a desire to learn. It is my earnest desire that this book either deepens your faith and your understanding of the Catholic religion. The Catholic faith has two sources of authority: Sacred Tradition and Sacred Scripture. The Catholic Church, in order to present its teachings in an approachable format, has published a Catechism. Consult the Catechism of the Catholic Church if you desire to explore anything presented in this book to a greater degree. I intend to cite the Bible to provide an authoritative basis for the claims I make in this book. The citations also allow the reader to research the claims for himself. The Bible will be cited by book, chapter, and verse. The Bible edition used in this text is The New American Bible.

Thyme is a member of the mint family and is a bushy, wood-based shrub with small yet highly fragranced, grayish green leaves followed by bands of pink or purple colored flowers in the early summers; it grows 15 - 30 cm tall and can be 40 cm wide. There are more than 350 different varieties of thyme all over the world, with French thyme or thymus vulgaris and lemon thyme being the most popular ones; further varieties are stated in the next chapters. Although there are a great many numbers of varieties, the general characteristics of each thyme are usually the same and it is only the color and dimensions that varies. In the medical community, the different species of thymes are distinguished by the composition of their essential oils. Thyme is incredibly versatile and blends seamlessly with almost all kinds of foods, especially in combination with basil, lemon and garlic. Generally, thyme enlightens and brings up the flavor of any dish. This is the reason as to why many of the Italian and French recipes incorporate thyme in their ingredient list. In addition to its culinary benefits, thyme is also used in aromatherapy. The essential oils of thyme are used in many traditional as well as clinical medicines due to their anti-viral, anti-septic, anti-parasitic, anti-rheumatic and anti-fungal properties. To delve a little deeper, thyme is a very strong detoxifying agent making it an ingredient in many of the detox food items. The herb is an excellent immunity booster, encourages white blood formation and resistance to harmful organisms. Thyme is also very effective against infections, digestive and respiratory to highlight a few. It can be taken as a cure to diarrhea and infections in the vagina (including thrush) & fallopian tubes. Its power as an anti-septic can be understood from the fact that as less as 1% thyme oil can be used to make a solution to treat gum and mouth infections. In addition, thyme is also a used as relaxant due to its soothing effect on the bronchi muscles; it helps to relieve recurring cough, asthma, dry coughs, laryngitis and bronchitis. Last but not the least, thyme being a digestive herb enhances appetite, digestion and stimulation of the liver. This is the extent of the medical properties the introduction will go to; detailed accounts on the medicinal properties of thyme will be given in subsequent sections. Thyme is considered native to Asia and southern Europe, i.e. Mediterranean basin; it has also been cultivated in Northern America and is known to thrive there as well. According to the Georgetown University Medical Center, the prevalence of thyme as a medically viable herb can be traced as back as 460 BC when Hippocrates, also known as the father of Western Medicine recognized it and documented its benefits in his work, Hippocratic Corpus. This is why most of the civilizations on the banks of the Mediterranean were prosperous and long-lasting. Some of these include: The Ancient Egyptians had found use of it and were mummifying the corpses of their pharaohs with it. The Ancient Greeks used it to burn incense in their temples and in their baths; they believed of it as a source of courage. Romans used it to purify their rooms and to give aromatic flavoring to alcoholic beverage and cheese.

But this herb has also been a valuable an integral part of ancient alternative medicine. More than 4000 years ago, one of the greatest of ancient doctors Charaka wrote in his compendium that the juice from the leaves of the sacred basil mixed with honey taken three times a day could cure patients suffering from whooping cough and chest ailments. That was the time when people relied on natural cures, and their own inmate good health to keep healthy and live long. I am proud to present this book to you, about one of the most useful herbs available to mankind today, of which the significant benefits have been written in ancient books of the East. Oscimum sanctum is the scientific name given to the sacred basil. What is the difference between cooking basil and sacred basil? Well, to tell you very frankly, most of the cooks in the East prefer to use the plant, which has purplish colored leaves, in their food, just before serving. They call that the cooking basil. On the other hand, the sacred basil has smaller and greener leaves, more pungent in odor and in taste. One rule passed down from the ancients is that milk and Basil do not mix. So when you are getting rid of a cough and cold, you make up a mixture of one teaspoonful each of honey and dried ginger, eight black peppercorns, and 5 to 10 basil leaves and boil them in water. Drink them down twice a day, and there goes your cold. But if you are boiling these ingredients in milk, leave the basil leaves out. Sacred basil has a religious and mythological significance coming down the ages, both in the East and in the West. The Greek Eastern Orthodox church used basil in traditional rituals and the women of the house used to sprinkle sacred basil on the threshold of their houses on St. Basil's day celebrated on 1 January in order to usher in a new and fruitful prosperous new year.
