  • - Breaking through fear in personal and professional life
    af John Holt
    223,95 kr.

Following a terminal diagnosis in 2010 from pure right ventricle heart failure and cancer, "Fields of Freedom: Breaking through fear in personal and professional life" seeks to speak from a powerfully authentic place of John's journey through facing overwhelming fears to a place of emotional, spiritual and professional freedom, liberation and return to health. The book charts a life story interspersed with spiritual and metaphysical reflections, and also seeks to offer cumulative wisdom from a place of "eldership" about working in the Helping Professions as a social worker, organisational consultant, group facilitator, coach, coach supervisor, counsellor, psychotherapist and clinical supervisor. It pulls no punches about the hard choices facing us, and faith in oneself required, if we seek to liberate ourselves from fear, over anxious attachment to one's "personal and professional reputation" and what the world may think of us. It seeks to accentuate, celebrate and deeply honour the "authentic Self" in Practitioners and Clients in their attempts to understand deeper truths about themselves and the worlds they co-create.

Whittaker passed the drinks over. "Anyway, it seems that he's got himself into a bit of bother," he continued. "A very serious bit of bother." "Bother?" repeated Kendall. Whittaker heaved a sigh. "Yes you know," he replied. "Trouble." Kendall nodded. "Oh trouble, I get you," he said. "So what sort of bother are we talking about?" Whittaker took another drink. "Well it's a case of murder I'm afraid." "Murder," repeated Mollie. Whittaker said nothing, but simply nodded agreement. Another murder, thought Kendall. Just what I need. "Just stop right there, for a moment, and re-wind will you," he said. "Then let's have it from the top, slowly."

"Mr. Kendall, in the past few months there have been a number of doctors who have mysteriously disappeared, or whose deaths were either alleged to be accidents, or were suicides, or they were actually murdered." Kendall made a mental note to find out about these 'other doctors.' "A number of doctors you said. How many are we talking about?" Mrs. Eaton thought for a few moments. "To my knowledge there have been at least eight cases in the past six months. There may be a whole lot more that I know nothing about."

John Holt was a rodeo champion who went on to become a professor at a major U.S. university. This is the story of how he achieved his dreams. There are three sections in the book. The first tells of the birth, the chasing and achieving of a dream, and then its death. The second section gives some general strategies for chasing dreams and some lessons learned in using them. The final section argues that the best and most general strategy for chasing a dream (and therefore living life to the fullest) is to try and do one's best in all life's pursuits. A payoff for doing so is that the skills learned in chasing one dream are useful in chasing the next.

The Marinski Affair began as a dull mundane case involving a missing husband. Okay, so he was a rich missing husband, but he was nonetheless, still only a missing husband. The case soon developed into one involving robbery, kidnapping, blackmail and murder. But was there really a kidnapping? And exactly who is blackmailing who? Who actually carried out the robbery? Who committed the murders? Who can you trust? Who can you believe? Is anyone actually telling the truth? What have they got to hide? And what connection was there with a jewel theft that occurred four years previously? All is not as it seems. Tom Kendall, private detective, had the task of solving the mystery. He was usually pretty good at solving puzzles, but this one was different, somehow. It wasn't that he didn't have any of the pieces. Oh no, he wasn't short of clues. It was just that none of the pieces seemed to fit together.

When two valuable oil paintings are missing, Kendall is asked to investigate on behalf of the Insurance Company. Reluctantly he accepts the job. Then a body is discovered, and then another. "So what do you think?" asked Mollie. "What do I think?" Kendall repeated. "Well with two people dead, I think someone has been practicing the art of murder."

Can men overcome their darkest nature and most compelling fears in this life, even if this struggle ultimately leads to their deaths? The wildly spectacular Arctic north of Canada is the setting for The Lost Patrol, a page from history Four men were led by Royal Northwest Mounted Police Inspector Francis J. Fitzgerald as they attempted to deliver annual reports and mail to the district office. The patrol left Ft. McPherson, Northwest Territories in late December 1910 headed for Dawson City, Yukon. Their trail runs along now-frozen rivers, through dense virgin forest, over rugged mountain passes and across trackless Arctic tundra, all of this during days holding less than four hours of light. Trouble sets in as the men become lost and are forced to constantly retrace their steps looking in vain for a turnoff that leads over the Wernecke Mountains. Temperatures reach minus 64 degrees then suddenly warm up to the point that frozen rivers turn to slush making travel nearly impossible. Food runs short. Their guide becomes disoriented. The now frost-bitten, emaciated men are forced to eat their sled dogs, then the animals' leather harness. They all die within a couple of days of each other along the Peel River, only 20 miles from the salvation of the fort. Fitzgerald's disaster is still discussed in the north country. People wonder what went wrong and say over drinks in isolated taverns in isolated settlements, "If it could happen to him, it could happen to me." Death is always close by in this beautiful, little-changed landscape. The Lost Patrol's fate brings this death that much closer.

Very little comes easy in the West, not even murder. Here, Ed Bouchee, a small town private detective living on the northern high plains, is asked to investigate a gruesome murder. From that moment on nothing is as it seems. Up is down and white fades to black. Bouchee and his headstrong Springer spaniel companion, The Dog, wander the slightly mean, out-of-kilter streets of Biederbeck, and the lonesome, often terrifying, mountain backroads of central Montana in search of Mark Grace's killer. Along the way eccentric Biederbeck luminaries like The Count, Dirt Tidrow, Liz and Sam Jones, Miskis, and others combine to both help and hinder the often-bewildered detective. Was Grace dispatched to protect an illegal trout netting operation? Was he killed in a squabble over a marginal timber-cutting contract? Or was the reason much darker, much crazier?

"If you appreciate the pristine beauty of the wilderness, the quiet trickle of a trout stream, or the bowl of the endless sky, you'll want to read these epistles by John Holt on his love and awe of Montana." - George Davidson, Zoo in a BookA consummate outdoorsman, John Holt has culled this marvelous collection of his articles and musings from a number of publications. It's like a philosophical travelogue, fishing and surveying the wilderness with a man who knows a brown trout from a bull trout from a golden trout. "Unlike an athlete who is usually finished by 40, writers can continue to grow and mature provided they work at it and don't bow down and worship the twisted god alcohol as I did some years ago. I'm still alive, mad as a hatter, mad as hell about the destruction of wild country and still trying to learn how to speak my native tongue."

"From brown bags to junk, inside angles to being crazy pissed off, John Holt wraps his emotions and insights into poetry that you will mesmerize and intrigue..."- Marcy Birdweather, Marcy's MusingsHolt is more commonly known for his prose -- novels like Plain Crazy in Paradise, Blown Away Under the Big Sky, and The Lost Patrol, or fact-filled articles in such publications as Men's Journal, Fly Fisherman, and Crossroads. He likes writing about the Great Outdoors, the beauty and savagery of nature, pastoral sojourns into the wild. But here Holt reveals another side of himself -- the poet. Here are nearly three score of his poems, which like his books show a mastery of language and an introspection that touches both mind and spirit.

"Westerners have come in all sorts - ranchers, frontiersmen, gold miners, gunfighters, even singing cowboys. John Holt gives us a poet, lamenting the passing of the West. His character's poems equal the story he tells."- Hollis George, editorial director and anthologistThe West has been celebrated with songs, words and photographs for well over 100 years. This novel is about poet John Wesley Gill, who lives in the Sweet Grass Hills, and his struggle to come to grips with the changing West as he also decides to resurrect his writing career through good deeds and very dark ones including murder. The book is a reflection of his travels. Gill's poems define his road experiences and this lyricism is reflected in the narrative that takes him along rough roads that lead to wild, out-of-the-way high plains mayhem and desolate locations.

"The best book about fly fishing since A River Runs Through It. Makes me dream of rainbow trout and cold streams and remote wilderness landscapes ..." ¿ Edward Squires, Not Quite Novellas"It's now been more than fifty years that I've been fishing, and roaming and loving Montana and the rest of the northern high plains. Lines on maps don't mean a damn thing to good country or to me. Montana flows into Alberta and British Columbia and Wyoming. The western Dakotas are the same place as Eastern Montana only with different names. Land is connected, not defined by human limitations. I first thought of writing and compiling this book while working a stream that wound through a brushy, tall-grass valley at the base of the Pryor Mountains last summer. Wild rainbows fought for the chance to engulf the Elk Hair caddis I was using. Beautiful healthy, small, colorful fish. Early afternoon was now sunset, the hours passing in an instant. And this made me remember the first trip to Montana in the sixties and the intervening hundreds of thousands (come to think of it. maybe more than a million) of miles I've wandered checking good, bad and indifferent water hanging out in serene isolation all over the place during the past half century. That time also passing in an instant that also times seemed eternal."

"John Holt's writings make the stark beauty of wilderness lands seem as real as if you're standing there on a high plateau with him. His characters are sunburnt, wind-blistered real. The harsh reality of living off the land offers a pleasure all its own. And death is always a integral part of Holt's landscape."- Nick Teranzi, Online Critics CornerJack Graves lived off the land, hunting and fishing and making his own way in this harsh, dry country that lay well away from cities. Free. Lonesome. No rules. But then his solitude is interrupted. Dark Star helicopters hovering over Mad Woman Gulch. Fires. Dead men. What was happening to his beloved Montana wilderness? Coal mining, that was nature's enemy. Meanwhile, Dark Star went about the business of punching the line through, hopefully before the winter weather, ugly storms screaming down from the arctic, closed in sometime in November. Piles of steel railroad ties, miles of heavy steel track, powerful graders, earth hauling rigs the size of houses, lots of explosives, track-laying machinery, D-11s, all of this stuff began accumulating in the company's yard. Would his life ever be the same?
