John MacGregor (1825-1892) John MacGregor, through his extremely popular books and magazine articles from 1865 to 1892, practically invented the sport of canoeing (or kayaking, we would call it today). One correspondent tells us MacGregor spent part of his youth in Halifax, Nova Scotia, where his father was stationed in the '30s in a fort. He may have picked up some canoeing experience there. He graduated from Trinity College, Cambridge, earned an M. A., and became a barrister-at-law in the Temple, London. He formed and became Captain of the Royal Canoe Club, England. From reading his books you will notice he carried in his canoe a number of religious tracts (in this movement called "Muscular Christianity") written in the local language and was always ready to hand them out. He did not travel on Sundays, but did lecture on his travels and gave much of the profits to charities, especially to boys in the inner cities. He published accounts of several other canoe cruises, including one to Scandinavia and another to Jordan and Egypt. We have seen the Baltic cruise book but haven't had time to scan it yet. The appendix to that book gives some construction details for his canoe designs.

In the earlier part of this voyage, and where it was most wished for, along the dangerous coast of France, fine weather came. Next there was an amphibious interlude to the Paris Exhibition, while the Rob Roy sailed inland. Thence her course over the sea brought the yawl across the broad Channel (100 miles) to Cowes and its Regattas, and to rough water in dark nights of thunder, until once more in the Thames and up the Medway she was under bright skies again. Cooking and sleeping on board, the writer performed the whole journey without any companion; and perhaps this log of the voyage will show that it was not only delightful to the lone sailor, but useful to others.
In the summer of 2008 I enlisted in the US Coast Guard and moved from Southern California to Cape Cod, Massachusetts. You ever been there? I recommend you bring a jacket. It's nice in the summer. In the winter, if it's a harsh one, you may spend a lot of time snowed in playing one-on-one Beer Pong with your roommate, or messaging girls on PlentyOfFish. So when I went home, two years later, for New Years, to party in the desert with all my old friends, I think it's safe to say that I might've overdid it. It took two years to get this book out: One year was spent writing it. The next year was spent apologizing. You ever come back to a familiar place and realize how everything stays the same, but at the same time it all feels completely different? Set under the bare sun and long, open roads of Southern California's Inland Empire, We Don't Belong Here is a 51,000 word, 72-hour memoir, soaked with reminiscence, mayhem, sobriety and the frayed and melted truths of excessive behavior.
