Set in rural Ireland in the early 20th century, The Playboy of the Western World by John Millington Synge is a dramatic play that follows the aftermath of a young man claiming to have killed his father.
The Shadow of the Glen and Riders to the Sea is a collection of two one-act plays written by John Millington Synge and first published in 1907. The plays are set in the rural west of Ireland and deal with themes of love, loss, and the harsh realities of life in a remote and unforgiving landscape. The Shadow of the Glen tells the story of a young woman named Nora who is trapped in a loveless marriage to an older man. When a mysterious stranger arrives at their cottage, Nora is tempted to leave her husband and start a new life with him. However, she soon discovers that the stranger is not who he seems and must face the consequences of her actions. Riders to the Sea is a tragedy that explores the devastating impact of the sea on the lives of a family living on the Aran Islands. The play follows Maurya, an old woman who has lost her husband and five sons to the sea. When her youngest son sets out on a dangerous fishing trip, Maurya must confront the possibility of losing him as well. Both plays are written in Synge's distinctive style, which blends naturalistic dialogue with poetic language and draws heavily on the traditions and folklore of rural Ireland. The Shadow of the Glen and Riders to the Sea are considered to be among Synge's most important works and are still widely performed and studied today. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations. Because we believe this work is culturally important, we have made it available as part of our commitment for protecting, preserving, and promoting the world's literature in affordable, high quality, modern editions, that are true to their original work.
Edmund John Millington Synge (16 April 1871 - 24 March 1909) was an Irish playwright, poet, writer, collector of folklore, and a key figure in the Irish Literary Revival. His best known play The Playboy of the Western World was poorly received, due to its bleak ending, depiction of Irish peasants, and idealisation of parricide, leading to hostile audience reactions and riots in Dublin during its opening run at Abbey Theatre, Dublin, which he had co-founded with W. B. Yeats and Lady Gregory. His other major works include "In the Shadow of the Glen" (1903), "Riders to the Sea" (1904), "The Well of the Saints" (1905), and "The Tinker''s Wedding" (1909).

The Aran IslandsThis book is a result of an effort made by us towards making a contribution to the preservation and repair of original classic literature. In an attempt to preserve, improve and recreate the original content, we have worked towards:1. Type-setting & Reformatting: The complete work has been re-designed via professional layout, formatting and type-setting tools to re-create the same edition with rich typography, graphics, high quality images, and table elements, giving our readers the feel of holding a 'fresh and newly' reprinted and/or revised edition, as opposed to other scanned & printed (Optical Character Recognition - OCR) reproductions.2. Correction of imperfections: As the work was re-created from the scratch, therefore, it was vetted to rectify certain conventional norms with regard to typographical mistakes, hyphenations, punctuations, blurred images, missing content/pages, and/or other related subject matters, upon our consideration. Every attempt was made to rectify the imperfections related to omitted constructs in the original edition via other references. However, a few of such imperfections which could not be rectified due to intentional\unintentional omission of content in the original edition, were inherited and preserved from the original work to maintain the authenticity and construct, relevant to the work.We believe that this work holds historical, cultural and/or intellectual importance in the literary works community, therefore despite the oddities, we accounted the work for print as a part of our continuing effort towards preservation of literary work and our contribution towards the development of the society as a whole, driven by our beliefs. We are grateful to our readers for putting their faith in us and accepting our imperfections with regard to preservation of the historical content. HAPPY READING!
The story of Christy Mahon, a timid peasant youth who is bullied, then rebels. This play of passion, and savage humour disturbed the first audiences at the Abbey Theatre, Dublin, in 1907 and led to riots.
During his short life, John Millington Synge wrote six plays which remain among the classics of Irish theatre. This volume contains six of his plays, the final one being Deirdre of the Sorrows, which he had nearly completed on his death.
When John Millington Synge and Molly Allgood fell in love, he was thirty-five, she nineteen. Neither knew that he had Hodgkin's disease and would die in three years. Seldom able to be alone together, they wrote letters almost daily. Synge's letters-hers do not survive-are a poignant record of a love that was foredoomed.
