This mini-book is a chapter from my forthcoming book Enlightenment 101: A Guide to God-Realization and Higher Human Culture. The book looks at the experience of enlightenment for the individual and the race. This chapter was begun in dialogue with an online correspondent who argued against what she said is my Eurocentric perspective on culture and in favor of the actions of some environmental extremists seeking to halt Western civilization. It continued with a friend who disputed my claim for the inherent superiority of America in the process of cultural evolution. The most important aspect of Freemasonry is the "open secret" or plainly recognized truth that there will never be a better world until there are better people in it. Although Freemasonry has a huge fund of esoteric knowledge about higher human development, it can be boiled down to a single statement: "Masonry makes good men better." That statement should always be amplified by at least this much: "Not better than others, but better than themselves-through self-improvement." More broadly, our fraternity makes good men better through self-directed growth in body, mind and spirit, influenced and inspired by Masonic teachings and guidelines. Freemasonry has to do with freeing people from ego-centered consciousness. It does so by emphasizing character development, value realization, abiding faith in God and the highest sort of patriotism. In Freemasonry, we ourselves are the rough stone which is to be hewn and polished into an ashlar fit for building the Temple of God. So the possibility of making good men better is one which extends from ordinary, everyday matters to the farthest range of human nature, traditionally called God-realization, spiritual freedom, liberation, unity consciousness, cosmic consciousness, nondual consciousness and, most commonly, enlightenment.

The essence of higher consciousness is never casting anyone out of your heart. That's Christian agapé, that's bodhisattva compassion, that's unconditional love. But love alone won't do it; there must also be discernment by the opened wisdom eye. Otherwise, it's "sloppy agape." The enlightened person discriminates between beingness and behavior, and judges the latter only. In our beingness, in the deepest center of our existence, we are all one, including those you describe as liberals, faggots, child molesters and other assorted scumbags, even traitors to our nation at the highest levels of government. We are all one because we are all expressions of God, the Supreme Identity. Of course, not everyone understands that his or her ultimate identity is God, and their behavior sadly reflects that self-ignorance. However, it is their actions and ideas which need to be corrected, not their personhood which needs to be eradicated. So your comments about homosexuals are not only intemperate, but also are uninformed and unchristian. Here's how I see the situation, scientifically, socially and spiritually.

This chapter begins: Perennial means always reappearing, like flowers which are planted once and then come up every spring. Philosophy, of course, means love of wisdom or, more generally, wisdom itself. So "the perennial philosophy" means wisdom which appears again and again. It has also been called the perennial wisdom and the ageless wisdom. It appears throughout history in all cultures, in all parts of the world. It is timeless and universal. It answers the most fundamental questions people have asked about existence. It speaks to their highest concerns, and has done so since humanity first developed a hunger for understanding ourselves and the meaning of existence. It has aspects of religion, metaphysics, philosophy, esoteric doctrines, occult teachings and hermetic mysteries, yet it transcends all of these specific traditions. It is, in the words of Ken Wilber, "the worldview that has been embraced by the vast majority of the world's greatest spiritual teachers, philosophers, thinkers, and even scientists....it's a testament to the universal nature of these truths, to the universal experience of a collective humanity that has everywhere agreed to certain profound truths about the human condition and about its access to the Divine." Having to throw a lot of punches for protection was a way of life in the Navy! Survival depended on how willing I was to stand up to a culture that left many unable to defend themselves. I did a lot of the heavy lifting for them. My experiences in the Navy taught me about not backing down and letting others walk over me. Of course, this comes at a price, mentally, physically and emotionally. I had to create ways to not only survive, but to prosper. The lessons learnt in the Navy certainly stayed with me through relationships and business and it came with good times and bad times. This book is about coming from nothing and ending up in a reasonably good place. I'm not quite at peace with myself yet; I'm a work in progress and I'm looking to turn the next page and see what awaits.
