Jose Marti escribio sobre !Hasta el cielo! del autor mexicano Jose Peon y Contreras: Un Virrey de Mexico amo a una mujer y pago a un malvado para que diese muerte a su esposo: el secretario del Virrey, que sabe el crimen, pero no es conocido del alto personaje, ama a una joven que se educa en un convento, por el Virrey cuidada y protegida. El asesino, ya Marques, ha exigido al Virrey la mano de la joven, que pasa por su pupila y es su hija. El secretario ha de estorbar el matrimonio: sabe que el pretendiente es el que mato a su padre: logra de Blanca una cita en su aposento: observalo el Marques, y entra tras el: vase Blanca con Sancho y el escudero de este, mata en rina de espadas al malvado. (...) Blanca esta en casa de Sancho, y el Virrey viene a dolerse con su secretario de su perdida. El hijo quiere vengar al padre muerto, y hay en el amor de Blanca pretexto de venganza. Con enunciar la situacion, se da a entender lo que ha hecho en ella el talento de un hombre que no sabe escribir sin poner en cada frase un latido de su corazon. Blanca oye que no es amada: el Virrey declara que los amantes son hermanos: el tuvo a Blanca en la madre de Sancho: todo dolor estalla; toda desventura es cierta: ya no han de verse nunca: ella ira a un convento: el no sabe donde ira: adios se dicen... !Hasta el cielo!
