The Surprising Latitude of Fate is a novel that follows the life of an Italian immigrant (Carmelo Visconti) as he attempts to navigate his way through the intricacies of the American culture. He is catapulted from village life in a small town on the Adriatic to the frenetic pace and lifestyle that comes with living in New York. His innate sense of adventure together with his burgeoning loneliness leads him on a path that he would come to regret. Carmelo is exposed to darker elements of his psyche that he was previously unaware of, especially his more violent nature. The inevitable consequences of his behavior bring him to a precipice that could result in his destruction. It is essentially the story of personal redemption.

This is a story about Laura. Laura was born with a sensitive spirit. As an adolescent, she is plagued by feelings of uncertainty and confusion about her relationship with her family and friends, but, most importantly, her personal identity and place within the social order. As events unfold, circumstances lead her into situations where she is forced to make some momentous decisions that will help her eventually come to terms with her own nature. Laura ultimately discovers her true calling in life and the artist she was destined to be. This singular existence illustrates the challenges that shape the depth and unique character of the self.

The United States, with its wealth of natural resources, expansive frontiers and diverse populations, has always been endowed with great potential. The possibilities inherent in the American nation are being squandered, however, by the arrogance of power. Those in power regard the free and vital political expression of the vast majority of people as a threat to their authority. Any real movement for a change in the political, social and economic order is seen as a threat to the status quo. The members of Congress have themselves been corrupted by both power and the corporate interests that they have become dependent upon.In this book, the mythology of greatness that is used so effectively in support of an extremist national agenda, is examined and challenged. The delusional self image of America's moral superiority in the world is countered with an honest appraisal of its actual behavior. An alternative national image is suggested, if there is to be hope for resolving the political, social and economic imbalances between the rich and poor nations that feeds the ever expanding violence in the world.
