El joven seminarista Don Luis de Vargas regresa a su pueblo natal para unas breves vacaciones allí antes de pronunciar sus votos. Se encuentra con que su padre, Don Pedro, se dispone a contraer nupcias con la joven Pepita Jiménez de 20 años y viuda de un octogenario. Los contactos entre el futuro sacerdote y la joven viuda son novedosos para el joven ya que ha pasado su adolescencia recluido en el seminario. El seminarista acompaña a Pepita en sus paseos por el campo, asiste a reuniones en su casa y, sin darse cuenta, cede poco a poco a una pasión que el considera pecaminosa, pero que se hace más fuerte que su vocación y que su amor por su padre, en el que ve secretamente un rival. Luis se quiere marchar, pero Pepita que le ama y que ha hecho todo lo posible para enamorarle, se finge enferma y le convence de que reconozca su amor y se lo comunique a su padre. Así lo hace, pero en lugar de hallar la oposición en su padre, este le dice que lo comprende y que a escondidas había estado haciendo todo lo posible para que las cosas llegasen a su solución natural.

De aqui que, por cada una de las novelas que se escribian hace ciento o doscientos anos, se escriben hoy centenares y hasta millares. A lo cual contribuye no poco el que haya hoy mas gente que las lea y que las compre. Pero esto mismo manifiesta lo caduco y efimero de la actual produccion. Como he de quitar yo su merito al que logra crearse un publico, ganar su atencion y su simpatia y entretenerle y divertirle durante diez, veinte o treinta anos, con los cuentos que escribe? Grande y muy envidiable merito es este; pero no llega, ni con mucho, al del autor que produce algo, no fuera de moda, sino superior a la moda y que ha de persistir cuando la moda pase, porque toda moda ha de autorizarse y justificarse, comprendiendolo en vez de desecharlo. Asi los clasicistas del siglo del renacimiento y del de Luis XIV ponian a Homero a la cabeza de los clasicos. Vino luego el romanticismo y declaro romantico a Homero. Y yo no dudo que los mas acerrimos naturalistas del dia dejen de citar la Iliada, como dechado y modelo del mas admirable naturalismo. El busilis, pues, y el toque magistral de cualquier obra de amena literatura no esta en seguir la moda, sino en dar la moda o mas bien en ponerse tan por cima de la moda y tan por cima de progresos y de mudanzas, que toda moda nueva se apoye y se autorice en aquella obra presentandola como dechado y tratando de convencer al publico de la excelencia de lo nuevo, no por su discrepancia, sino por su semejanza con aquel modelo inmortal. Que haya obras de esta clase en el dia y cuales sean, es lo que yo no me atrevere a decidir. La sentencia es ardua. La posteridad la dictara sin duda. Limitemonos nosotros a reconocer el merito relativo de los que interesan, divierten o entusiasman con sus escritos, aunque sea durante corto numero de anos, a determinado numero de...

En esta obra admirable, Valera nos relata la historia de Doña Luz, hija del marqués de Villafría. De procedencia algo dudosa por parte de madre y, sin embargo, reconocida por el marqués, cuando niña, la pequeña Luz vivió en distintos hogares. Al morir el marqués, confía a su hija, a la sazón de 15 años, al cuidado de su administrador Don Acisclo. El hombre cuida bien a Doña Luz, quien permanece en el pueblo llevando una vida ejemplar y haciéndose querer por todo el mundo, pero desdeñando a cualquier posible pretendiente. Alrededor de nuestra heroína giran las vidas de otros personajes muy interesantes y tan bien retratados como la protagonista: doña Manolita, la hija del médico, y su esposo Pepe Güeto, el cura don Miguel, el médico don Anselmo y don Acisclo.

No es más sabio quién se limita a conocerlos teóricamente y a reflexionar sobre los conocimientos adquiridos. Es más, el exceso de especulación y reflexión teórica suele conducir a engañarse y a ser engañado. La capacidad de ser perspicaz no se basa en la teoría, sino en la práctica. Esta es la tesis que parece defender Juan Valera (Cabra, Córdoba, 1824-1905) en su novela Pasarse de listo y que él mismo practicó a lo largo de su vida. Y es que el escritor fue un hombre de mundo: diplomático de profesión, poseía un temperamento hedonista que lo condujo a numerosas aventuras galantes y a gozar de la vida social, en la cual, por cierto, fue introducido por otro gran escritor: el duque de Rivas. Pero, además, es Valera "una anomalía literaria", en palabras de la crítica. En un tiempo en que el Realismo se hallaba en pleno apogeo, con la narrativa de Galdós o Pereda, sus obras huyen del relato pormenorizado de hechos y de la descripción minuciosa de personajes o ambientes para profundizar en los estados de ánimo de los personajes, especialmente de los femeninos. Es decir, cabría situarlo dentro de una estética idealista.

Genio y figura -I- En tres distintas y muy apartadas épocas de mi vida, peregrinando yo por diversos países de Europa y América, o residiendo en las capitales, he tratado al vizconde de Goivo-Formoso, diplomático portugués, con quien he tenido amistad afectuosa y constante. En nuestras conversaciones, cuando estábamos en el mismo punto, y por cartas, cuando estábamos en punto distinto, discutíamos no poco, sosteniendo las más opuestas opiniones, lo cual, lejos de desatar los lazos de nuestra amistad, contribuía a estrecharlos, porque siempre teníamos qué decirnos, y nuestras conversaciones y disputas nos parecían animadas y amenas. Firme creyente yo en el libre albedrío, aseguraba que todo ser humano, ya por naturaleza, ya por gracia, que Dios le concede si de ella se hace merecedor, puede vencer las más perversas inclinaciones, domar el carácter más avieso y no incurrir ni en falta ni en pecado. El Vizconde, por el contrario, lo explicaba todo por el determinismo; aseguraba que toda persona era como Dios o el diablo la había hecho, y que no había poder en su alma para modificar su carácter y para que las acciones de su vida no fuesen sin excepción efecto lógico e inevitable de ese carácter mismo. Los ejemplos, en mi sentir, nada prueban. De ningún caso particular pueden inferirse reglas generales. Por esto creo yo que siempre es falsa o es vana cualquier moraleja que de una novela, de un cuento o de una historia se saca. Mi amigo quería sacarla de los sucesos de la vida de cierta dama que ambos hemos conocido y tratado con alguna intimidad, y quería probar su tesis y la verdad trascendente del refrán que dice: genio y figura, hasta la sepultura. Yo no quiero probar nada, y menos aún dejarme convencer; pero la vida, el carácter y los varios lances, acciones y pasiones de la persona que mi amigo ponía como muestra son tan curiosos y singulares, que me inspiran el deseo de relatarlos aquí, contándolos como quien cuenta un cuento. Voy, pues, a ver si los relato, y si consigo, no adoctrinar ni enseñar nada, sino divertir algunos momentos o interesar a quien me lea.
