No es más sabio quién se limita a conocerlos teóricamente y a reflexionar sobre los conocimientos adquiridos. Es más, el exceso de especulación y reflexión teórica suele conducir a engañarse y a ser engañado. La capacidad de ser perspicaz no se basa en la teoría, sino en la práctica. Esta es la tesis que parece defender Juan Valera (Cabra, Córdoba, 1824-1905) en su novela Pasarse de listo y que él mismo practicó a lo largo de su vida. Y es que el escritor fue un hombre de mundo: diplomático de profesión, poseía un temperamento hedonista que lo condujo a numerosas aventuras galantes y a gozar de la vida social, en la cual, por cierto, fue introducido por otro gran escritor: el duque de Rivas. Pero, además, es Valera "una anomalía literaria", en palabras de la crítica. En un tiempo en que el Realismo se hallaba en pleno apogeo, con la narrativa de Galdós o Pereda, sus obras huyen del relato pormenorizado de hechos y de la descripción minuciosa de personajes o ambientes para profundizar en los estados de ánimo de los personajes, especialmente de los femeninos. Es decir, cabría situarlo dentro de una estética idealista.

Extracto: ... impulso me lleva a escribiros sin conoceros. Se que me expongo a que me juzgueis poco circunspecta, muy atrevida y harto libre. Ignoro vuestra condicion en el mundo, vuestro linaje, vuestras creencias religiosas, vuestra edad y vuestra patria. Mi espiritu, no obstante, se siente arrebatado hacia donde vuestro espiritu se halla y se cree unido a el por el estrecho y fuerte lazo de los mismos sentimientos y de las mismas ideas. En torno mio todo me es indiferente, todo me parece rastrero y mezquino. No es extrano, pues, que busque yo como vos, en apartadas regiones, un alma que simpatice con la mia, aunque sea solo por sentirse atormentada de la misma dolencia. Faustino, un Fausto sin poder ni magia, aparece condenado desde las primeras páginas por su debilidad de carácter. Sin duda, aunque es producto de su ambiente y de su época (mimado por todos, nunca tuvo que trabajar), él mismo es culpable en gran medida de su destino: sueña grandezas imposibles de realizar, al tiempo que es abúlico y perezoso. Al crear a su personaje, sin duda Valera pensaba en sà mismo. También a él le faltó dinero cuando era joven y asimismo se mostró indeciso en la elección de una carrera; probó la diplomacia, la polÃtica y el periodismo, además de cultivar diferentes géneros literarios. LAS ILUSIONES DEL DOCTOR FAUSTINO como novela tiene varios lunares (una acción dislocada, algunas digresiones un tanto premiosas y ciertos episodios melodramáticos). ArtÃsticamente es inferior a otras novelas de Valera, como Pepita Jiménez, Juanita la larga o El Comendador Mendoza; pero en cuanto a tema, no sólo es una de las obras más interesantes de su producción, sino acaso también de toda la literatura española del siglo diecinueve.

Juan Valera (1824-1905). Escritor español que se opuso al naturalismo y al realismo social y se decantó por la novela psicológica. Miembro de la Real Academia Española desde 1862, de una amplia cultura, en particular con gran conocimiento de la grecolatina, es considerado el mejor crítico literario del siglo XIX después de Menéndez Pelayo. Su obra, centrada en dos temas fundamentales (los conflictos amorosos y los religiosos) se caracteriza por su corrección, precisión, sencillez y armonía; consideraba que la novela debe reflejar la vida, pero de una manera idealizada y embellecida, eliminando los aspectos penosos y crudos de la realidad, porque es un arte y su fin es la creación de la belleza.

Morsamor es la última novela escrita por Juan Valera. En la misma se mezclan escenas que bien pudieran salir de un antiguo libro de caballería, con la aventura moderna, una aventura tanto del cuerpo como del espíritu, donde realidad y leyenda se mezclan como en un sueño despierto y revelador.
El joven seminarista Don Luis de Vargas regresa a su pueblo natal para unas breves vacaciones allí antes de pronunciar sus votos. Se encuentra con que su padre, Don Pedro, se dispone a contraer nupcias con la joven Pepita Jiménez de 20 años y viuda de un octogenario. Los contactos entre el futuro sacerdote y la joven viuda son novedosos para el joven ya que ha pasado su adolescencia recluido en el seminario. El seminarista acompaña a Pepita en sus paseos por el campo, asiste a reuniones en su casa y, sin darse cuenta, cede poco a poco a una pasión que el considera pecaminosa, pero que se hace más fuerte que su vocación y que su amor por su padre, en el que ve secretamente un rival. Luis se quiere marchar, pero Pepita que le ama y que ha hecho todo lo posible para enamorarle, se finge enferma y le convence de que reconozca su amor y se lo comunique a su padre. Así lo hace, pero en lugar de hallar la oposición en su padre, este le dice que lo comprende y que a escondidas había estado haciendo todo lo posible para que las cosas llegasen a su solución natural.
