Elevée par un père familier avec les philosophes du XVIIIe siècle, Mme Gervaisais est une femme instruite, d'un esprit bien équilibré. Elle se convertit au catholicisme après un séjour à Rome avec son jeune fils. Après la guérison quasi miraculeuse de l'enfant, elle tombe dans une sorte de dévotion mystique et se livre au Père Zibilla, qui la torture, l'humilie, la détache de toute affection humaine...

Ce roman écrit par Jules de Goncourt et Edmond de Goncourt en 1865 raconte la mortelle descente dans l'alcool de Germinie Lacerteux. Ce personnage serait inspiré de leur servante Rose Malingre, dont les Goncourt ont découvert la double vie après sa mort.
