Karin Fossum er en mester i at beskrive menneskeskæbner på en måde, så de kravler helt ind under huden på læseren. I "Varsleren" møder vi Johnny Beskow, som bor sammen med sin forhutlede, opgivende mor og kun har sin elskede bedstefar at holde sig til. Når han ikke er hos bedstefaren, er han imidlertid intet rart bekendtskab. Han har nemlig valgt en noget bizar måde at forvalte den lillebitte hjørne af indflydelse, han har på sin og andres tilværelse: Johnny elsker at gøre folk bange. Ikke bare en lille smule - de skal skræmmes fra vid og sans, de skal mindes om livets forgængelighed og lykkens lunefulde natur. I det lille samfund, hvor Johnny bor, får han efterhånden nogle temmelig ubehagelige ting på samvittigheden. Det starter en dejlig dag hos en yngre ægtepar, der har lagt deres lille datter til at sove ude i haven i barnevognen. Da moren vil kigge til hende, ser hun, at barnevognen er fuld til randen med blod. Og nej, der er er ikke sket babyen noget. Men moren bliver aldrig sig selv igen. Det fortsætter med en ellers rask og rørig 70-årig dame, der en dag må læse sin egen dødsannonce i avisen, og det bliver helt slemt, da et bedemandsfirma pludselig tropper op hos en dødssyg, men dog stadig levende mand for at hente ham - i en kiste. Det ender naturligvis værre end galt - for Johnny.
