"The Flag-Raising" is an ancient Community human sprits story book written by Kate Douglas Smith Wiggin. This story, constructed with care and remarkable know-how, exemplifies Wiggin's present for telling deeply emotional and inspiring tales. Set in a tiny American network, the tale revolves around the making plans and satisfaction of a flag-elevating rite. Wiggin makes use of this focal factor to research issues related to country wide delight, cohesion, and a network's collective memory primarily based on shared values and customs. The personalities are certainly depicted, each contributing to the tapestry of communal life and the experience of belonging that the flag represents. Wiggin's wording is sleek and evocative, communicating the core of the American manner of existence in addition to the enduring concepts symbolized with the aid of the flag. Her potential to weave non-public memories into larger topics of patriotism and communal engagement makes "The Flag-Raising" a fascinating read. The work of literature serves as a reminder of the significance of banding collectively to celebrate and guard the ideas that define a country. "The Flag-Raising" exemplifies Wiggin's lengthy impact as a creator able to touching her readers' hearts while inspiring them to bear in mind their very own contributions to the cloth of their communities.

"The Old Peabody Pew" is a novella written by Kate Douglas Smith Wiggin, an American author known for her works in children's literature. The book was first published in 1907 and is considered a classic of American literature. Unlike her more famous work, "Rebecca of Sunnybrook Farm," this novella is more of a reflective and nostalgic piece rather than a children's story. The story is set in a New England village and is narrated by the church pew itself, which has witnessed generations of congregants. The Old Peabody Pew has been a silent observer of the community's joys, sorrows, and spiritual experiences. As it recounts its long history, it offers a glimpse into the lives of the various people who have occupied it over the years. The central focus of the novella is the romance between two characters, young lovers Theodora and Tilly. Their story unfolds within the context of their experiences at the village church, where the Old Peabody Pew plays a significant role as the place where they sit during services. The pew's perspective allows readers to see how Theodora and Tilly's relationship evolves and how it intertwines with the life of the church and the broader community. Wiggin's narrative in "The Old Peabody Pew" is characterized by its nostalgic and sentimental tone, evoking a sense of the past and the enduring nature of tradition. The novella explores themes of love, faith, community, and the passage of time. It reflects on the changing dynamics of a small-town society and the way people's lives are interconnected within the framework of a church and a shared history. While "The Old Peabody Pew" may not be as well-known as some of Kate Douglas Wiggin's other works, it remains a valuable piece of literature for its evocative storytelling and its ability to capture the essence of a bygone era. It provides a glimpse into the life and culture of a New England village and the enduring power of human connection through the lens of a seemingly ordinary church pew.

Kate Douglas Wiggin (September 28, 1856 - August 24, 1923) was an American educator and author of children's stories, most notably the classic children's novel Rebecca of Sunnybrook Farm. She started the first free kindergarten in San Francisco in 1878 (the Silver Street Free Kindergarten). With her sister during the 1880s, she also established a training school for kindergarten teachers. Kate Wiggin devoted her adult life to the welfare of children in an era when children were commonly thought of as cheap labor. Wiggin went to California to study kindergarten methods. She began to teach in San Francisco with her sister Nora Smith assisting her, and the two were instrumental in the establishment of over 60 kindergartens for the poor in San Francisco and Oakland. She moved from California to New York, and having no kindergarten work on hand, devoted herself to literature. She sent The Story of Patsy and The Bird's Christmas Carol to Houghton, Mifflin & Co. who accepted them at once. Besides the talent for story-telling, she was a musician, sang well, and composed settings for her poems. She was also an excellent elocutionist. Her first literary work was Half a Dozen Housekeepers, a serial story which she sent to St. Nicholas. After the death of her husband in 1889, she returned to California to resume her kindergarten work, serving as the head of a Kindergarten Normal School. Some of her other works included Cathedral Courtship, A Summer in a Canon, Timothy's Quest, The Story Hour, Kindergarten Chimes, Polly Oliver's Problem, and Children's Rights

MARCH had come in like a lion, and showed no sign of going out like a lamb. The pussy willows knew that it was, or ought to be, spring, but although it takes a deal to discourage a New England pussy willow, they shivered in their brown skins and despaired of making their annual appearance even by April Fool's Hay. The swallows still lingered in the South, having received private advices from the snow-birds that State o' Maine weather, in the present season, was only fitted for Arctic explorers. The air was keen and nipping and the wind blew steadily from the north and howled about the chimneys until one hardly knew whether to hug the warmth of the open fire or to go out and battle with the elements. Little did the rosy girls of the Wareham Female Seminary (girls were still "young females" when all this happened)-little did they care about snow and sleet and ice. Studies went on all the better with the afternoon skating and sliding to look forward to.

We are doing the English cathedral towns, aunt Celia and I. Aunt Celia has an intense desire to improve my mind. Papa told her, when we were leaving Cedarhurst, that he wouldn't for the world have it too much improved, and aunt Celia remarked that, so far as she could judge, there was no immediate danger; with which exchange of hostilities they parted.

FAR, far up, in the bosom of New Hampshire's granite hills, the Saco has its birth. As the mountain rill gathers strength it takes "Through Bartlett's vales its tuneful way, Or hides in Conway's fragrant brakes, Retreating from the glare of day." Now it leaves the mountains and flows through "green Fryeburg's woods and farms." In the course of its frequent turns and twists and bends, it meets with many another stream, and sends it, fuller and stronger, along its rejoicing way. When it has journeyed more than a hundred miles and is nearing the ocean, it greets the Great Ossipee River and accepts its crystal tribute. Then, in its turn, the Little Ossipee joins forces, and the river, now a splendid stream, flows onward to Bonny Eagle, to Moderation and to Salmon Falls, where it dashes over the dam like a young Niagara and hurtles, in a foamy torrent, through the ragged defile cut between lofty banks of solid rock. Widening out placidly for a moment's rest in the sunny reaches near Pleasant Point, it gathers itself for a new plunge at Union Falls, after which it speedily merges itself in the bay and is fresh water no more.

It is an advantage for an author to have known many places and different sorts of people, though the most vivid impressions are commonly those received in childhood and youth. Mrs. Wiggin, as she is known in literature, was Kate Douglas Smith; she was born in Philadelphia, and spent her young womanhood in California, but when a very young child she removed to Hollis in the State of Maine, and since her maturity has usually made her summer home there; her earliest recollections thus belong to the place, and she draws inspiration for her character and scene painting very largely from this New England neighborhood. Hollis is a quiet, secluded place, a picturesque but almost deserted village--if the few houses so widely scattered can be termed a village--located among the undulating hills that lie along the lower reaches of the Saco River. Here she plans to do almost all her actual writing--the story itself is begun long before--and she resorts to the place with pent-up energy.

"I DON' know as I cal'lated to be the makin' of any child," Miranda had said as she folded Aurelia's letter and laid it in the light-stand drawer. "I s'posed of course Aurelia would send us the one we asked for, but it's just like her to palm off that wild young one on somebody else."
