A fresh approach to understanding the essentials of the New Testament. Introduction to the New Testament through its Authors is a collaborative project involving fifteen New Testament scholars who teach college students and know their needs. This introductory overview focuses on the major themes of each book and letter in the New Testament. By asking ourselves what were the major themes of Matthew (or any other New Testament writer), we discover what we should pay attention to as we read and why it is relevantfor us today. Introduction to the New Testament through its Authors differs from other introductions to the New Testament in the following ways: - It is organized around each of the nine New Testament authors to emphasize that their concerns (and not ours) are the most important. Thus, the book generally follows the order of the New Testament books, with the exception of Acts, the letters of John (1, 2, and 3 John), and Revelation, which are grouped by author.- However, this attempt to seek out the main focus of the authors does not mean that the book does not address our life today. In fact, more than one hundred highlights clarify how these authors might have applied their writings to the Christian life of the twenty-first century.- It is a collaborative project, with chapters written by fifteen New Testament scholars who have also had great success in the classroom. These professors come from twelve of the best evangelical universities in North America.- It was written by professors who teach college students and understand their culture, not by people who have spent most of their time teaching seminary or master's degree subjects.- The introductory topics (Who? When? Where? Why?) are condensed into a one-page summary of essential information.- Since the book was written specifically for college students, it can also be used effectively in Christian education programs in the church.- Its format is simpler and intentionally shorter than other introductions. "More" is not always "better," especially in this type of text.
Probing the mystery of Satan's messengerPaul's enigmatic "thorn in the flesh" in 2 Corinthians has baffled interpreters for centuries. Many offer suggestions as to the identity of Satan's messenger; others despair that the puzzle is unsolvable. In Paul's Thorn in the Flesh: New Clues for an Old Problem, Kenneth Berding reopens the case. He follows a trail of clues that includes ancient beliefs about curses, details from Paul's letters, Jesus's own suffering, and the testimony of the earliest Christian interpreters. Berding offers twenty criteria--some familiar, others neglected--that any proposal must explain. While the usual suspects fall short, Berding suggests a new solution--one that satisfies all the evidence and gives us a fuller view of Paul. Far from an abstract puzzle, Paul's own suffering is relevant to Christians today.Paul's Thorn in the Flesh is an accessible study that casts new light on Pauline studies, first--century background, and theological and pastoral concerns.
"What Are Spiritual Gifts? is a clear and readable presentation of a subject of great importance to the church. A necessary read for anyone concerned about church structure and ministry, it goes a long way toward bringing together both Pentecostal and non-Pentecostal believers." --Benny C. Aker, Assemblies of God Theological Seminary Many Christians have tried to discover their spiritual gifts only to find the process frustrating and complicated. Rarely in our search do we actually ask what should be our central question: What are spiritual gifts? Kenneth Berding believes we have misunderstood spiritual gifts, which has led to a misguided search. His convincing and readable study suggests that the Holy Spirit does not give special abilities (the conventional view), but rather calls us and places us into various ministries to build up and strengthen the body of Christ. Beginning with a fictional "spiritual gifts" seminar, Berding addresses up front the concerns and questions readers will have about this popular topic. He then discusses the central biblical texts on spiritual gifts and explains Paul's use of key terms and the role of the Spirit. Kenneth Berding (Ph.D., Westminster Theological Seminary) is associate professor of New Testament at Talbot School of Theology at Biola University, La Mirada, Calif. He is the author of Polycarp and Paul (Brill) and has extensive ministry experience both overseas and in the local church.
