This book contains two of the best known works of Khalil Gibran. Kahlil Gibran was a Lebanese-American writer, poet and visual artist, also considered a philosopher although he himself rejected the title.Gibran discussed ""such themes as religion, justice, free will, science, love, happiness, the soul, the body, and death"" in his writings, which were ""characterized by innovation breaking with forms of the past, by symbolism, an undying love for his native land, and a sentimental, melancholic yet often oratorical style.""About his language in general (both in Arabic and English), Salma Khadra Jayyusi remarks that ""because of the spiritual and universal aspect of his general themes, he seems to have chosen a vocabulary less idiomatic than would normally have been chosen by a modern poet conscious of modernism in language."" Gibran,""Ignoring much of the traditional vocabulary and form of classical Arabic, he began to develop a style which reflected the ordinary language he had heard as a child in Besharri and to which he was still exposed in the South End [of Boston]. This use of the colloquial was more a product of his isolation than of a specific intent, but it appealed to thousands of Arab immigrants.""

"You ask me how I became a madman? That is how it happened: One day, long before many gods were born, I woke from a deep sleep and found that a ll my masks were stolen." In ancient Greece and Rome stage actors used to wear masks. The Latin word for "Mask" was "Person", derived from the Latin "per", meaning "through which" and "son" meaning "sound". So the word "Person", or "that through which the sound comes", used to refer to the mask worn by an actor as he performed his role or character on stage. Life is a the ultimate stage and, in every day life, we usually don different masks, or personae, to match the different roles we play during our many social interactions. In "The Madman", Khalil Gibran tells us that all his masks were stolen. He has no more roles to play. So whatever we are going to hear will be the voice of his true self. Khalil Gibran is telling us the truth. For the poetry of The Madman is raw, honest, and deeply human. Gibran is reaching deep into his subconscious, digging for precious pearls of wisdom and presenting them to us natural, unpolished.
