His work has been called demented, hilarious, quirky and well outside the mainstream, and with his twelfth collection of short stories Manion unapologetically stays with that formula. With this newest collection Manion once again asks the reader to get off the bench and into the game as he dishes out laughs, offense and even a few poignant moments. There is no point to be made here. Only the hope that somewhere amidst all the run-on sentences, unnecessary profanity and poor grammar, readers will come away with some unique thoughts of their own.Perfect reading for artists, commuters and people who spend an inordinate amount of time on the toilet.
Finally! All of the stories under one cover. Nap Lapkin, America's top agent, respected and feared by every agency in Washington, is both a lover and fighter and so much more. And less. But mostly more. There can be no argument that this is the funniest book ever written. No argument whatsoever.
With this newest collection of irreverent short stories Manion once again asks the reader to get off the bench and into the game as he dishes out laughs, offense and even a few poignant moments. There is no point to be made here. Only the hope that somewhere amidst all the run-on sentences, unnecessary profanity and poor grammar, readers will come away with some unique thoughts of their own. Perfect reading for artists, commuters and people who spend an inordinate amount of time on the toilet. This is his fourth collection of short stories and frankly we're just as surprised as anyone that he is continuing to write them. But here it is. It helps if you have a good imagination. That's not to imply that we think if you don't enjoy it then you don't have a good imagination. It's certainly not a litmus test for creativity. All we're saying is that it doesn't hurt if you're a little off. If you're looking for us to try and talk you into it than I think you've clearly overestimated our interest in your reading it. But having said that, if you've already invested this much time in reading the description what's the worst that could happen if you gave it a shot? Exactly. You've been warned.
An interesting short story has to be equal parts confession, exultation and suicide note. The writer has to be arrogant and insecure, brimming with joy and despair, able to see hope and hopelessness in everything and, before he can claim to be honest, has to be comfortable lying his ass off. This newest collection of Lance Manion short stories strives for all of the above and is sure to include something to entertain, inspire and offend everyone. His writing has been called demented, hilarious, quirky and well outside the mainstream. The author guarantees that if this isn't the best book you've ever read he will send you a sincere apology along with a short explanation of why sometimes it is necessary to exaggerate claims about how good a book is in order to have someone buy it. Funny, and at times thought-provoking, "The Ball Washer" is definitely not for the faint of heart. Read at your own risk.
Lance spends too much time thinking about all the ways life would be different if our eyes were on the top of our feet as opposed to perched over our noses. Shoes for instance... Or karate. He doesn't enjoy thinking thoughts like these, but grow them as he might, the beards never help. So off they come. Hairy reminders clogging up the sink, if hairs were thoughts and plumbing was being normal. Lance should know. Lance is a plumber. Well, a plumber in the sense that you and I are plumbers. This is his seventh collection of humorous and odd short stories, none of which have ever made the New York Times Best Seller List. If that in any way influences you to avoid giving it a look then it's probably for the best.
The irreverent union of George Carlin and Dave Barry with a just a hint of Tucker Max. Something to entertain, inspire and offend everybody. "A rambling collection of essays, anecdotes, and assorted madness. The humor often borders on the demented, sort of a cross between David Sedaris and Happy Tree Friends. If you're looking for something well outside the mainstream, this will probably amuse you." -Melydia Utter Randomonium "Here we have a collection of strange little tales, fully of the wacky and the wild. Now, some are hilarious, others are quirky and strange, like the author says, it's like a video montage." -Martin Gibbs Voltaire's Reviews "Each small story that makes up the book is filled with dark satirical humor, and the stories in Merciful Flush are morbidly addicting." -Olivia Morley The Verb: Univ. of New Hampshire "It isn't often that I pick up a book and feel that it's so wrong and yet so right. The stories all have a certain amount of quirkiness and snark that makes them fun to read." -Donald L Pitsiladis Casa de Pitsiladis "Humor is realizing the frankness and humility in our lives. "Merciful Flush" is a fine pick for those looking for mirth and memoir." -Midwest Book Review " An easy and compulsive read, Merciful Flush by Lance Manion is a blogging success story and definitely worth picking up for any travel reading. Very very very very imaginative, I can't believe what is now in my mind that wasn't there before." -Anya On Starships and Dragonwings "So, if you enjoy David Sedaris, Tina Fey or movies like The Hangover, Bridesmaids, or even Your Highness, it is quite likely that you'll enjoy Lance Manion's collection." -Zserilyn Finney The John Hopkins News-Letter "Funny. Twisted. Real." -Nanci Page Readers "The humor at times is way out there and may be a bit much for some readers. This is certainly one of those books that at time had me rolling with laughter while other times I was cringing." -Rita Rita Reviews "They are off-putting but also entertaining, and you cannot look away. If you enjoy black humor then definitely give this short story compilation a read." -Dan Lanelotti The Snapper: Millersville University
His work has been called demented, hilarious, quirky and well outside the mainstream and with his sixth collection of short stories Manion unapologetically stays with that formula. Big sloshing mixes of poignancy and offensiveness, hope and callousness. He understands that we are all kind and bigoted. Wonderful and pathetic. The human experience is wildly erratic. And he won't pretend otherwise. Having said that, his writing is not for everybody. Do you really want to be everybody?
We are stardust and our ass is grass. While it is true we all carry around a few molecules of Abraham Lincoln it is also true we carry a few from Hitler as well. We are indeed a little bit country ... and a little bit rock n' roll. We are told on a daily basis what conclusions to reach and every day we are told how to feel. When to be happy and when it is appropriate to be sad. A laughtrack has been provided. Love and hate are the only fuel we respond to. We doth protest too much. Everyone is so afraid of offending each other but it's healthy to get offended. Don't believe me? Read this book. The Trembling Fist, Lance Manion's fifth collection of short stories, is far and away his fifthest.
