Africa and the Discovery of America is a historical book written by Leo Wiener and published in 1920. This book explores the possibility of Africans discovering America before Columbus. Wiener argues that there is evidence to suggest that African explorers may have reached the Americas as early as the 4th century. He examines the similarities between African and American cultures and languages, as well as ancient maps and artifacts that suggest contact between the two continents. This book is divided into two volumes, with the first volume focusing on the evidence for African exploration of the Americas, and the second volume delving into the possible consequences of this discovery. Overall, Africa and the Discovery of America is a fascinating exploration of an alternative history of the Americas, and provides a unique perspective on the early interactions between Africa and the New World. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations. Commentary to the Germanic Laws and Mediaeval Documents is a book written by Leo Wiener and first published in 1915. The book is a comprehensive analysis and interpretation of the Germanic laws and medieval documents, including the laws of the Franks, Saxons, and Lombards, as well as the Salic and Ripuarian laws. The book is divided into two parts. The first part provides an overview of the Germanic laws and their historical context, while the second part offers a detailed commentary on the laws and documents themselves. Wiener's commentary is based on a thorough examination of the original texts, as well as on his extensive knowledge of the legal and cultural traditions of the Germanic peoples.Throughout the book, Wiener explores the development of Germanic law and its relationship to other legal systems, such as Roman law. He also examines the social and cultural context in which the laws were created and the ways in which they were enforced. Overall, Commentary to the Germanic Laws and Mediaeval Documents is a valuable resource for scholars, historians, and anyone interested in the history of law and legal systems in Europe. Wiener's insights and interpretations provide a deep understanding of the Germanic legal tradition and its significance for the development of Western law. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations. Because we believe this work is culturally important, we have made it available as part of our commitment for protecting, preserving, and promoting the world's literature in affordable, high quality, modern editions, that are true to their original work.

2023 Reprint of the 1922 Edition. Full facsimile of the original edition and not reproduced with Optical Recognition Software. This volume comprises volume II in this three-volume series. Professor Wiener, in this second volume of his series Africa and the Discovery of America, deals exhaustively with the documentary information relating to "the presence in America of cotton, tobacco and shell money, before the discovery of America by Columbus. . . The accumulative evidence is overwhelmingly in favor of an introduction of the articles under discussion from Africa by European or Negro traders, decades earlier than 1492." (Foreword, p. ix.) The importance, for the history of Pre-Columbian civilization, of these discoveries cannot be overestimated. Moreover, their significance is not concerned alone with the history of America. They suggest a revision and realignment of historical frontiers in Europe and Africa as well, from a date not later than the first quarter of the fifteenth century. Lastly, Africa and the Discovery of America forms, as it were, a sequel to Professor Wiener's previous scholarship, enabling the historian to trace the influence of the Arabs as the torchbearers of civilization. It was they who in the eighth century, through the medium of the Spanish Mozarabs, recreated European culture, and at a later period, through that of the Arab-Black cultures, of whom the West African Mandingoes were the most important, at least almost entirely recreated, if they did not actually create, the civilization of the native American tribes, throughout both continents, and planted, so to speak, in the New World, the seeds of two great modern industries, cotton and tobacco.
