Many people are familiar with astrology only through Sun-sign columns in newspapers, but they have little understanding of what it really means to be born "under" a particular zodiac sign. The astrological student may know that the Sun is the most important factor in the birth horoscope; but frequently used terms such as "self-expression" give little insight into this most profound and complex of astrological symbols. The seminars in this reprint of the CPA Press original explore the many dimensions of the astrological Sun, from the Sun as a father symbol to its importance as a significator of personal identity, vocation, and spiritual values. Also examined are progressions of the Sun to natal planets, and major planetary aspects to the natal Sun. With so little written work available on the Sun in the horoscope, this innovative volume offers psychological and astrological perspectives, which will be invaluable for both the student and the professional astrologer.
This reprint of the original CPA Press version explores the fundamental issue of how we defend ourselves against conflict and suffering through characteristic psychological mechanisms reflected in the natal chart. Both the pathological dimensions of defences and their creative contribution to the personality are carefully explored through the zodiac signs and through the multi-levelled planetary symbols Saturn and Chiron, to reveal the many ways in which we both protect and injure ourselves when confronted with what we experience as life's threatening face. The seminar format brings complex psychological material alive in an accessible way, and ample case material highlights chracteristic human behaviour patterns. This volume is a profound revelation of the creative ways in which we can approach what may initially seem like our greatest failings.
Winner of the IAJS award for best authored book of 2018! C. G. Jung had a profound interest in and involvement with astrology, which he made clear in virtually every volume of the Collected Works, as well as in many of his letters. This ancient symbolic system was of primary importance in his understanding of the nature of time, the archetypes, synchronicity, and human fate. Jung's Studies in Astrology is an historical survey of his astrological work from the time he began to study the subject. It is based not only on his published writings, but also on the correspondence and documents found in his private archives, many of which have never previously seen the light of day. Liz Greene addresses with thoroughness and detailed scholarship the nature of Jung's involvement with astrology: the ancient, medieval, and modern sources he drew on, the individuals from whom he learned, his ideas about how and why it worked, its religious and philosophical implications, and its applications in the treatment of his patients as well as in his own self-understanding. Greene clearly demonstrates that any serious effort to understand the development of Jung's psychological theories, as well as the nature of his world-view, needs to involve a thorough exploration of his astrological work. This thorough investigation of a central theme in Jung's work will appeal to analytical psychologists and Jungian psychotherapists, students and academics of Jungian and post-Jungian theory, the history of psychology, archetypal thought, mythology and folklore, the history of New Age movements, esotericism, and psychological astrology.
Disturbed psychological states have baffled both religion and medicine for as long as human beings have existed. Despite the explorations of modern psychology we are no closer to understanding these expressions of human suffering than we were a thousand years ago. Although it can offer no solutions, astrology can provide many insights into why some individuals respond to conflict and unhappiness by retreating form life, and why do others respond with savagery toward their fellows. This is a reprint of the CPA Press original. The three seminars in this book use astrological perspectives to explore a spectrum of extreme psychological states, from the condition known as psychopathy to the collective mechanism of scapegoating as much a pathology as any diagnosed mental illness. Astrologers often avoid confronting the issues of madness and human destructiveness, and political correctness has made it even more difficult to face such issues honestly and without sentiment or hypocrisy. But only by exploring the roots of what we call madness can we find any positive and creative approach to the mystery of why some individuals fail to cope constructively with life 's challenges. This book will sometimes shock and disturb, but it is an invaluable resource for any practicing astrologer concerned with the dilemma of human suffering, and any lay person wishing to understand how astrology can contribute to our comprehension of human behaviour.
This is a reprint of the original version from the CPA Press. Bridging the apparent gap between psychological and predictive astrology is not easy, and many astrologers feel they must polarise and espouse one while rejecting the other. The seminars in this innovative volume explore the psychological dynamics which accompany concrete events, focusing on the important psychological model of the complex as both a generator of individual behaviour and an archetypal image of individual fate. This book offers profound insights into the ways in which inner and outer reality coincide and reflect each other.
This book is based on a seminar originally given by Liz Greene in 2005, entitled 'Chiron in Love' because Chiron's story is most clearly and poignantly enacted in our most personal exchanges with the people closest to us. It includes a background of mythic material about Chiron that can help to shed light on the interaction between Chiron in one horoscope and the planets and angles in another. In 2020, during the height of the Covid pandemic, Liz gave three further online seminars to explore the relationship between Chiron and the global outpouring of helplessness, fear, rage, polarisation, and apparently obsessive determination to find scapegoats that has emerged as a result of the pandemic and its psychological consequences. Sections of these more recent seminars have been amalgamated with the original seminar, resulting in a broad spectrum of themes all related to the central core of Chiron's myth and meaning. Ways of permanently healing Chiron's wound and saving the world are not included. Instead, the emphasis is on the individual and the necessity of working as honestly and insightfully as possible with the feelings of envy, rage, bitterness, and potential wisdom and compassion reflected by Chiron's complex story. Astrology students of all levels will find Liz Greene's insights invaluable in working with this paradoxical and challenging astrological symbol.
The inner planets--Mercury, Venus, Mars--are the foundations of what psychology calls the ego, the sense of personal self. In this fourth volume in the Seminars in Psychological Astrology series, Liz Greene and Howard Sasportas discuss the value of the inner planets as they symbolize important aspects of personality. We are not trained to give value to our private needs, feelings, and qualities. Indeed, because of their intensely personal nature, they are often suppressed or overlooked as irrelevant to society. Likewise, the inner planets have tended to be given less attention by psychological astrologersfor they are the personal planets. The authors show us that in order to give the most that we can to our interactions with the rest of the world, we must first understand our own needs and have a healthy ego a personal authenticity. Their book teaches us the process of understanding how these three planets actually represent our individuality, and how they directly color the energy of the rest of our horoscope. Greene and Sasportas blend the processes of astrology and psychology in a unique and important way in this indepth insight into the archetypes represented by the inner planets.
Greene and Sasportas focus on psychological complexes and astrological factors that encompass issues from childhood, including the stages of childhood, the parental marriage, subpersonalities and more. An important book helping those in the counseling process.
"Liz Greene's astonishingly lucid mind has for half a century lent dignity and unassailable intellectual plausibility to astrology. The Astrology of Fate is her tour de force." --Steven Forrest, author of The Inner SkyCombining an understanding of astrological symbolism and the psychological processes involved in the pursuit of individuality, the author shares insights about how the concept of fate evolves. Through myths, fairy tales, and zodiacal signs, she shows us this mythological journey.
The author uses basic astrological concepts symbolically and practically in a framework of Jungian psychology to show how people relate to one another on both conscious and unconscious levels.
