Den studentikose Rasmus Berg, Jeppes søn, har studeret I København og tillagt sig forfinede, arrogante akademiske manérer og insisterer på at blive kaldt Erasmus Montanus - en latinificering af hans eget navn. Han træder respektløst alle over tæerne, støder sin kommende svigerfar fra sig, afslører at Per Degn ikke forstår latin men 'fører bevis' for at han en hane og at Mor Nille en sten og hævder ligefrem at Jorden er rund. Skønt den ikke spilles så hyppigt mere hører Barselstuen til blandt Holbergs bedste komedier og er bestemt værd at læse. Komedien blev opført første Gang i Oktober 1723. Holberg bemærker selv i 1. Levnedsbrev (1728), at nogle blev irriteret over Kvindekarrikaturerne heri; men at andre og mere fornuftige Bedømmere fandt, at netop disse Skildringer placerede Komedien blandt de bedste. Corfitz er tæt på 70 men nyligt viet til byens "kønneste jomfru" på blot 17 som nu ligger i barselsseng. Men Corfitz mistænker sin unge viv for være ham utro. Komedien gør grundigt grin med tidens mode, hvor man tog på barselsvisit, og den unge hustru må udholde en uendelig række af gratulanter på "visitter". Den gamle Ægtemand, som frygter for at blive hanrej, havde Holberg behandlet med grum Satire i Skæmtedigtet om Jens Larsen; i Komedien tager han Brodden bort og holder igen paa den mere indtrængende Karakteristik af den bekymrede Husherre.
