Aber wenn auch diese Zeiten wildester Barbarei und Zerfleischungswut in zivilisieren Ländern grösstenteils vorüber sind, so wiederholen sie sich doch in andrer Form in jenen erschütternden gesellschaftlichen Tragödien von Mord, Selbstmord, Hungertod, unverschuldeter Krankheit, frühzeitigem Tod, Arbeitslosigkeit u. s. w., welche wir beinahe tagtäglich an uns vorüber müssen ziehen lassen, ohne im Stande zu sein, ihre schreckliche Wiederkehr zu verhüten oder ohne ihnen mehr als eine kurze Regung des Mitleids schenken zu können. Tagtäglich sehen wir Menschen aus Mangel der notwendigsten Lebensbedürfnisse schnell oder langsam zu Grunde gehen, während dicht neben ihnen der besser situierte Teil der Gesellschaft in Überfluss und Wohlleben erstickt, und während der National-Wohlstand einen nie gesehenen, aber in der Regel nur Einzelnen zu Gute kommenden Aufschwung nimmt. Wenn wir sehen, dass Hunderttausende in Üppigkeit verderben, während Millionen dasselbe Schicksal erleiden durch Darben und Entbehren, so wird man beinahe versucht, jenem englischen Schriftsteller Recht zu geben, welcher fragt: »Ist es in Ordnung, dass Millionen beinahe Hungers sterben, damit einige Tausende an Dyspepsie (Magenüberladung) zu Grunde gehen?«
