Once upon a time there lived a king called Bubi the First, who was very kind to poor children and mice. For the children he built a factory for making dolls and cardboard horses, for the benefit of the mice he made wise laws to stop cats catching them, and absolutely forbade the use of mouse-traps.

Written by Luis Coloma and first published in 1900, the book tells the story of Currita, a beautiful and ambitious young woman who rises from humble beginnings to become a countess and a prominent figure in the city's elite circles. The novel follows Currita's journey as she navigates the complex social hierarchy of Madrid, using her wit, charm, and cunning to climb the ranks and secure her place among the aristocracy. Along the way, she encounters a cast of colorful characters, including wealthy landowners, scheming politicians, and passionate lovers, all of whom play a role in shaping her destiny. As Currita rises in status, she must also confront the challenges and contradictions of her position.
