Welcome to G'day, mate!, a short course in Australian English and culture.G'day, mate! is a course book for foreign students on tour groups or study tours to Australia, but is also suitable as complementary material for General English courses for overseas students or migrants. It is aimed at Pre-intermediate level; however, since many activities can be adapted to different levels, G'day, mate! is suitable for Elementary to Intermediate levels. This course book was written to help foreign students and migrants from all nationalities learn to cope with Australian English and Australian culture. It includes notes and information about Australian English, culture and places that would be superfluous for Australian teachers. However, I have regularly worked with teachers from other English-speaking countries who were not familiar with Australia. The extra information is for their benefit. G'day, mate! includes the following sections:¿ Useful Aussie English¿ Cultural notes¿ TasksG'day, mate! is not meant to be a complete textbook. It is recommended you supplement it with units from your favourite grammar book, a pronunciation course, Australian English listening and your other favourite material. Recommendations for grammar points are made in most units.

I love a good story. Don't you? This is a collection of anecdotes and examples of mistakes non-native speakers have made in the process of learning and using English as a second language. These stories have been collected over 30 years in various countries and from numerous nationalities, and include difficulties with vocabulary, pronunciation, writing and culture. All examples have a twist - by making unintentional mistakes, non-native users of English have added a new, humorous dimension to the English language. As English is expanding at an ever-faster rate to become the world's number one language of communication, many 'Englishes' are evolving and this book is only a small selection of the quirky mistakes made in this process. If you speak English as a second or third language, this book will help you avoid making the same mistakes. If you love English and appreciate its subtleties, I am sure you will enjoy this selection of genuine mistakes made by English language learners, other non-native speakers and writers of English and companies from around the world. "Luke Zimmermann uses hilarious stories to make the teaching of language come alive. As the title promises, you will laugh about English."Richard Lederer, author of Anguished English

"Two ways" shows a means of looking at the world and trying to understand its many complexities. It has always helped me to understand a situation better by considering it from two opposing perspectives. The Lord shows us certain examples of this in the Bible: there is the way of Cain and the way of Able. There is the tree of life and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. There are the two brothers, Jacob and Esau, one the Lord loved and one He hated. There are angels and fallen angels. There is Israel and the rest of the world. Do I need to go on?This book is, however, not an attempt to divide the world into two and turn it binary, as that would be oversimplifying it but contains ten real-life experiences in various countries around the world that view and interpret crucial issues in life from two contrasting standpoints. It helped me to make good choices. Most, but not all, of the stories have a Christian bias. As a born-again Christian it is hard not to. The characters from Holland, Japan, Australia and various Middle Eastern countries are based on real people that I have met and known and some are composites.I hope it will inspire you to contemplate life's issues in a new way and make certain choices if you haven't already.

Do you know what makes or breaks a language learner? Why is it that some succeed in acquiring a second language and some do not? Are there factors in a person's personality, background or circumstances that play a major role in the language learning process? And if so, what are these factors and what can we do about them to help language learners become successful? All these questions came up in my mind when I was confronted with students who did not seem to learn in the usual ways and students who learned unusually fast.In 25 years of language learning, linguistic study and teaching English as a Second Language, I have come in contact with many hundreds of language learners from all over the world and from many different backgrounds. I observed them, asked questions, thought deeply about language learning and finally decided to write down my thoughts and findings in this book. The information is organised into 7 chapters, describing factors that are crucially important in the language learning process. I do not pretend that this list is complete. One obvious example of an important factor that is not mentioned is 'motivation'. I am sure that while you are reading this book, you will think of more. However, the 7 factors described in this book, are not always that obvious or clear-cut and need some discussion. This is not an academic book. It has been written in a style that is easy to read and is full of real-life stories and anecdotes. You are hereby encouraged to fill in your own experiences and test the statements made about language learning and the conclusions drawn. This book is meant to make you think, give you new insights and entertain at the same time. Also, numerous activities and language learning techniques have been included for you to try out.Even experienced language teachers and language learners will still find a number of facts, ideas and activities that are interesting, unusual and useful.
