Malthe Conrad Bruun kæmpede i sine unge år for ytringsfrihed og den franske revolutions frihedsidealer, og i lighed med flere af Oplysningstidens øvrige forfattere var han indædt modstander af adelen, enevælden og det religiøse hykleri. Det kommer klart til udtryk i det satiriske værk "Aristokraternes katekismus" fra 1796, der efterligner den katekismus, som alle skolebørn blev undervist i, men i stedet opfordrer til despoti, undertrykkelse og udbytning. "Aristokraternes katekismus" var en del af grunden til, at Malthe Conrad Bruun blev udvist af Danmark og måtte gå i eksil i Frankrig.Malthe Conrad Bruun (1775-1826) var en dansk-fransk geograf og forfatter. Han begyndte sin karriere som digter, men efter flere retssager, blandt andet for det satiriske værk "Aristokraternes katekismus", blev han udvist og måtte gå i eksil i Frankrig. Her begyndte han at skrive for flere forskellige tidsskrifter og var i 1821 med til at stifte det geografiske selskab i Paris. I dag er han mest kendt som manden, der i 1812 navngav det geografiske område Oceanien.
