Man forstår, hvad Poul Borum hentydede til i sin nu klassiske oversigtsbog over den internationale lyrik, Poetisk modernisme, da han om Antonio Machado (1875-1939) skrev: “Oprigtigt, desillusioneret, intimt, ofte udnytter han folkepoesiens mollstemte rigdomme.” Machado er én af den tidlige modernismes vigtigste stemmer og han har sat et uafrysteligt præg på lyrikken i de to første årtier af 1900-tallet, som del af den såkaldte 98-generation der bl.a. banede vejen for Federico García Lorcas poesi.Bogen rummer et fyldigt udvalg af Antonio Machados forfatterskab, med to digtsamlinger så rigt repræsenteret, at man har en tydelig fornemmelse af begge værker. Det er Gorm Rasmussen der har udvalgt og oversat – og som også har forsynet bogen med et fyldigt forord.
