"LIfe Is Its Own Meaning" is a book of lyric poems discovering meaning in life through an exploration of the author's life, family, friends, residences and illnesses. Overcoming the ravages of advanced age and illness is a major theme of the book, which includes an entire section of poems devoted to kidney dialysis. "Life Is Its Own Meaning" finds meaning in just being alive and celebrates that meaning in simple, straightforward verse.
"The Brass Ring", Hofstadter's ninth book of poetry, describes the coming-out of a man who once considered himself straight, later gay and finally bisexual. There are poems dedicated to various men and women. Not all the poems are about sexuality, though. Many are concerned with Hofstadter's experiences with illness, including kidney disease. Others deal with war and revolution, music, aging, and the author's career as a librarian.
Poetry. VISIONS, a new collection of Marc Elihu Hofstadter's poetry, documents the attempt to reify the optics of paintings into the text of poetry. Marc Hofstadter wields an optical instrument that captures the rays that emanate from the interiors of things, rather than from their outsides. This is what makes him a poet, an excellent one. I believe, as he does that the moment is the key to the eternal and color the key to the invisible--Yves Bonnefoy. To read Marc Hofstadter's VISIONS is to feel you're walking through an intimate museum.Zen-like, Hofstadter sets his spare evocations against 'reality, white, /which is unknown to us, ' so that we're left to contemplate again the mysteries of art and artist, color and consciousness, and to remember that 'sometimes life's joys are small'--Kim Addonizi
