Vanguards of the Plains is a historical romance novel set in the 1800s along the famous Santa Fe Trail. The story follows the adventures of a group of pioneers, including the brave and independent heroine, Kate, who is determined to make a life for herself in the untamed American West. Along the way, they face many challenges, including hostile Native American tribes, harsh weather conditions, and dangerous outlaws. Kate finds herself torn between two men, the rugged cowboy, Jim, and the wealthy businessman, Henry, both vying for her affection. As the pioneers make their way across the rugged terrain, they must rely on their courage and resilience to survive and thrive in a land that is both beautiful and unforgiving. With vivid descriptions of the landscape and characters that are both complex and engaging, Vanguards of the Plains is a thrilling and romantic tale of the American West.1917. The novel begins: It might have been but yesterday that I saw it all: the glinting sunlight on the yellow Missouri boiling endlessly along at the foot of the bluff; the flood-washed sands across the river; the tangle of tall, coarse weeds fringing them, edged by the scrubby underbrush. And beyond that the big trees of Missouri woodland, so level against the eastern horizon that I used to wonder if I might not walk upon their solid-looking tops if I could only reach them. I wondered, too, why the trees on our side of the river should vary so in height when those in the eastern distance were so evenly grown. One day I had asked Jondo the reason for this, and had learned that it was because of the level ground on the farther side of the valley.
