An small booklet which explores the series of paintings 'Hospital' by the British artist Robert Priseman. Accompanied by essays from Professor Margaret Iversen and Dr Ben Cranfield, this important series of paintings was produced between 2004-2006. Key influences are Edward Hopper's alienating worlds of urban isolation and Magritte's painting of 1954 'The Empire of Lights' where life is seen to be in a delicate state of flux and transition. This is echoed in the 'Hospital' series where medical environments view the human body without hierarchy or function, but existing between two states of being.

Das Prinzip der Dualität steht in physischer ebenso wie in metaphorischer Hinsicht seit jeher im Mittelpunkt von Stezakers Arbeit. In seiner jüngsten Collagenwerkreihe "Double Shadow" bedient sich der Künstler Prozessen des Teilens und Verdoppelns, um über das Unheimliche duplizitärer Figuren zu reflektieren: etwa jener des Doppelgängers, des Janus und des Hermaphroditen. Durch eine Aneinandersetzung silhouettenhafter Konturen wird den aus trivialen Quellen übernommenen archetypischen Bildern neues Leben eingegeben. Die in Hollywood-Bildgestaltungen der 1950er-Jahre so scharf umrissenen Profile von Männlichkeit und Weiblichkeit lösen sich in eigentümliche, bisweilen monströse Hybride auf; es entstehen beunruhigende Nebeneinanderstellungen an der Überlagerung von Schattenbereichen, die sich zwischen den Welten aufzutun scheinen. Von der Verwendung von Schattenrissen in Märchenillustrationen des Fin de Siècle wie auch dem frühen expressionistischen Film ließ sich Stezaker nach eigener Aussage dazu anregen, in diesen Werken "die Freude am Zeichnen" ebenso wiederzuentdecken wie "die Kraft des Konturs, eine Trennlinie zwischen An- und Abwesenheit sowie dem Imaginären und dem Realen abzustecken".

Why did the history of art come into being? Is it now in danger of slipping into obsolescence? And, if so, should we care? This book proposes that we might reframe the questions concerning art history by asking what kind of writing might help the discipline to better imagine its actual practices - and its potential futures.

Lacan was in close contact with the Surrealists and, early in his career, exchanged ideas with Dali. This book offers a reading of Dali's "paranoiac-critical" tour de force, "The Tragic Myth of Millet's Angelus".

Includes 10 classical sculptures from the Hermitage Museum (mostly Roman and one or two Greek), removed from their plinths and repositioned to share a raised floor with the viewer; and 17 abstracted body-forms by Antony Gormley.
