I en lille syditaliensk landsby holder to par ferie. En kvinde venter på nyt om sin deporterede mand i efterdønningerne af Frankrigs befrielse. Modstandskvinden Thérèse indleder en relation til gestapoagenten, der har anholdt hendes mand, for at modstandsgruppen kan likvidere ham.
