Math Mammoth Grade 8-A Worktext is the first student book for eighth grade mathematics, and part of the Math Mammoth Grade 8 complete curriculum. This book starts with a study of exponent laws, using both numerical and algebraic expressions. The first chapter also covers scientific notation (both with large and small numbers), significant digits, and calculations with numbers given in scientific notations. In chapter 2, students learn about geometric transformations (translations, reflections, rotations, dilations), common angle relationships, and volume of prisms, cylinders, spheres, and cones. Next, in chapter 3, our focus is on linear equations. Students both review and learn more about solving linear equations, including equations whose solutions require the usage of the distributive property and equations where the variable is on both sides. Chapter 4 presents an introduction to functions. Students construct functions to model linear relationships, learn to use the rate of change and initial value of the function, and they describe functions qualitatively based on their graphs. Features Math Mammoth focuses on conceptual understanding. It explains the "WHY", so students can understand the math, not just learn "HOW" to do it.The curriculum is mastery-oriented. This means it concentrates fairly long on a topic, delving into its various aspects. This promotes conceptual understanding, as opposed to spiral curricula that often tend to jump from topic to topic too much.It requires very little teacher preparation. :)The curriculum has no separate teacher's manual nor is it scripted. The introduction to each chapter has some notes for the teacher concerning the material in the chapter. All the instruction is written directly to the student in the worktext. After each chapter introduction, you will find a list of Internet links and resources (games, quizzes, animations, etc.) that can be used for fun, illustrations, and further practice.

Math Mammoth Grade 8-B Worktext is the second student book for eighth grade mathematics, and part of the Math Mammoth Grade 8 complete curriculum. The book starts with chapter 5, graphing linear equations. Students study slope, and graph and write linear equations in slope-intercept and standard forms. They also learn about parallel and perpendicular lines. In chapter 6, students delve into square roots, cube roots, and irrational numbers and solve equations involving square and cube roots. The rest of the chapter is spent studying the Pythagorean Theorem and its applications. Next, in chapter 7, we focus on systems of linear equations. Students learn the three basic techniques for solving these and also solve a variety of problems that are solved with a pair of linear equations. The last chapter covers statistical topics: scatter plots and two-way tables.Features Math Mammoth focuses on conceptual understanding. Math Mammoth Grade 6-A worktext (Canadian version) is the first student book for sixth grade, and part of the Math Mammoth Grade 6 complete curriculum. In this book, students encounter the beginnings of algebra, learning about algebraic expressions, one-variable equations and inequalities, integers, and ratios. We also review and deepen the students' understanding of decimals, and study ratios and percent as new topics for 6th grade. The year starts out with a review of the four operations with whole numbers (including long division), place value, and rounding. Students are also introduced to exponents and do some problem solving.Chapter 2 starts the study of algebra topics, delving first into expressions and equations. Students practice writing expressions in many different ways, and use properties of operations and the idea of maintaining the equality of both sides of an equation to solve simple one-step equations. We also study briefly inequalities and using two variables. Chapter 3 has to do with decimals. This is a long chapter, as we review all of decimal arithmetic, just using more decimal digits than in 5th grade. Students also convert measuring units in this chapter. Ratios is a new topic (chapter 4). Students are already familiar with finding fractional parts from earlier grades, and now it is time to advance that knowledge into the study of ratios, which arise naturally from dividing a quantity into many equal parts. We study such topics as rates, unit rates, equivalent ratios, and problem solving using bar models.Percent (chapter 5) is an important topic to understand thoroughly, because of its many applications in real life. The goal of this chapter is to develop a basic understanding of percent, to see percentages as decimals, and to learn to calculate discounts. This curriculum is essentially the same as the U.S. version of Math Mammoth, only customized for the Canadian audience in these aspects:The curriculum uses the metric measurement units. Since Canadians do use imperial units, such as inches and pounds, in some contexts, the curriculum does mention them, but not often. The spelling conforms mostly to American English, taking into account a few key differences where Canadian English follows British English.Numbers are formatted with a space as a thousands separator, and a point as a decimal separator.Page (paper) size is Letter. The US version of the curriculum is aligned to the Common Core Standards, which means this curriculum may not be properly aligned to the sixth grade standards in any Canadian province. However, you can probably find material for any missing topics in the neighbouring grade levels of Math Mammoth materials.Available separately, Math Mammoth Grade 6-B worktext covers the second half of 6th grade math. Also available are the answer keys and a book containing cumulative reviews and chapter tests.

Math Mammoth Grade 6-B worktext (Canadian version) is the second student book for sixth grade, and part of the Math Mammoth Grade 6 complete curriculum. This book contains chapters 6-10 of the curriculum. In chapter 6, we first review prime factorization, and then study the greatest common factor and the least common multiple.Chapter 7 first presents a thorough review of fraction operations from 5th grade (addition, subtraction, and multiplication). The topic of focus in the chapter is fraction division. Students also do some problem solving with fractions. In chapter 8, students are introduced to integers. They plot points in all four quadrants of the coordinate plane and learn to add and subtract with negative numbers. Multiplication and division of integers are studied in 7th grade. In geometry (chapter 9), the focus is on the area of polygons. This is studied in a logical progression: first, the area of right triangles, then the area of parallelograms, then, the area of triangles, and lastly the area of polygons. We also review some topics from earlier grades (quadrilaterals, perimeter, basic drawing). Other major topics in this chapter are calculating surface area of some solids using nets, and volume of rectangular prisms with fractional edge lengths.Lastly, in chapter 10, students study statistics. The focus idea is that of a statistical distribution. Students learn about measures of center and measures of variability, and how to summarize distributions using those. They learn how to make dot plots, histograms, boxplots, and stem-and-leaf plots. This curriculum is essentially the same as the U.S. version of Math Mammoth, only customized for the Canadian audience in these aspects:The curriculum uses the metric measurement units. Math Mammoth Grade 4-A worktext (Canadian version) is the student worktext for the first half of the 4th grade math, and part of Math Mammoth complete curriculum for fourth grade. This book starts out with a review of addition and subtraction, patterns, and graphs. We illustrate word problems with bar diagrams and study finding missing addends, which teaches algebraic thinking. Children also learn addition and subtraction terminology, the order of operations, and statistical graphs.Next come large numbers-up to millions, and the place value concept. At first the student reviews thousands and some mental math with them. Next are presented numbers up to one million, calculations with them, the concept of place value and comparing. In the end of the chapter we find out more about millions and an introduction to multiples of 10, 100, and 1000. The third chapter is all about multiplication. After briefly reviewing the concept and the times tables, the focus is on learning multi-digit multiplication (multiplication algorithm). The children also learn why it works when they multiply in parts. We also study the order of operations again, touch on proportional reasoning, and do more money and change related word problems. The last chapter in the 4-A worktext is about time, temperature, length, weight, and volume. Students will learn to solve more complex problems using various measuring units and to convert between measuring units. FeaturesMath Mammoth focuses on conceptual understanding. Math Mammoth Grade 5-B Worktext is the student book for the second half of grade 5, and part of the Math Mammoth Grade 5 complete curriculum. This is the Canadian version, which means the book uses mostly metric units, is formatted to letter size, and large numbers are formatted with a space (e.g. 214 000). However, keep in mind that the "Grade 5" refers to the U.S. grade 5, and corresponds roughly to Canadian school system's year 6. The main areas of study in this Grade 5-B worktext are operations with decimals, fraction arithmetic (all operations with fractions), and geometry (review of angles, area, and perimeter; drawing circles; classifying triangles & quadrilaterals; volume of rectangular prisms). In chapter 5 we study graphing in the coordinate grid, line graphs, and average. Today's world has become increasingly complex with lots of data presented in the media, so our children need a good grasp of statistical graphs to be able to make sense of all of that information. Chapter 6 continues our study of decimals. The focus is on multiplying decimals by decimals, dividing decimals by decimals and conversions between measuring units. Chapter 7 covers the addition and subtraction of fractions - another topic of focus for 5th grade, besides decimals. The most difficult topic of this chapter is adding and subtracting unlike fractions, which is done by first converting them to equivalent fractions with a common denominator. In chapter 8, we study the multiplication and division of fractions from various angles. Chapter 9 takes us to geometry, starting with a review of angles and polygons. From there, students will learn to draw circles, to classify triangles and quadrilaterals, and the concept of volume in the context of right rectangular prisms (boxes). Please note this is the student worktext and does not contain the answers. The answer key book is available separately.

Math Mammoth Grade 5-A Worktext (Canadian version) is the student book for the first half of grade 5, and part of the Math Mammoth Grade 5 complete curriculum. This is the Canadian version, which means the materials use mostly metric units, it is formatted to letter size, and large numbers are formatted with a space (e.g. 214 000). However, keep in mind that the "Grade 5" refers to the U.S. grade 5, and corresponds roughly to Canadian school system's year 6. The main areas of study in Math Mammoth Grade 5-A worktext are the four operations with whole numbers, place value with large numbers and the judicious use of calculator, problem solving & simple equations, decimal arithmetic (operations with decimals), and graphing. The year starts out with a study of whole numbers and their operations. Students get to review multi-digit multiplication and learn long division with two-digit divisors. We also review divisibility and factors from fourth grade, and study prime factorization. In the second chapter, the focus is on large numbers and using a calculator. This is the first time a calculator is introduced in Math Mammoth complete curriculum-thus far, all calculations have been done mentally or with paper and pencil. I want students to learn to be critical in their use of the calculator and use it with good judgment. Every exercise where calculator use is to be allowed is marked with a little calculator symbol. The third chapter is about equations and problem solving. We study simple equations with the help of a balance and bar models. The main idea is to get students used to the idea of an equation and what it means to solve an equation. Students also do a fair amount of problem solving using the visual bar model. The fourth chapter is about decimals and some of the operations with decimals (the rest will be studied in part 5-B). In this chapter, we focus on place value with decimals, addition and subtraction of decimals and multiplication and division of decimals by whole numbers. In chapter 5 we study graphing in the coordinate grid, line graphs, and the concept of average. Please note this is the student worktext and does not contain the answers. This book has gray-scale interior pages.Math Mammoth Grade 7-B is a student worktext for the second half of grade 7 mathematics studies. The curriculum meets and exceeds the Common Core Standards (CCS) for grade 7. It exceeds them because we study the Pythagorean Theorem, which actually belongs in grade 8 in the CCS.We start out with a study of ratios and proportions. Students study unit rates, proportions, proportional relationships and graphing, scaling geometric figures, floor plans, and maps. The next chapter provides thorough lessons on the concept of percent. Students learn to solve a wide variety of problems involving percentages, including percentage of change, percentages of comparison, and simple interest problems.Geometry is our next focus. Students draw geometric figures using a protractor and a ruler, and they also learn some basic geometric constructions. The other themes of this chapter are various angle relationships, area and the perimeter of a circle, conversions between units of area and of volume, surface area, volume, and cross-sections when solids are sliced with a plane.Next, we cover square roots, the Pythagorean Theorem, and its applications. I have included the Pythagorean Theorem in order to make the curriculum work as a pre-algebra course. You can omit the entire chapter if you are following the Common Core Standards for grade 7.The next chapter is an introduction to probability. Besides learning the basic idea behind probability as the ratio of favorable events to all possible events, students compare experimental probabilities to theoretical ones in probability simulations and even design some on their own.Lastly, the curriculum covers statistical concepts. The major areas of study are random sampling and learning to compare two populations using some basic statistical measures and graphs.
