He raised his eyes devoutly, and instinctively touched the silver crucifix hanging by its purple ribbon at his breast. The orange-red glow of the sun encompassed him with fiery rings, as though it would fain consume his thin, black-garmented form after the fashion in which flames consumed the martyrs of old, -the worn figures of mediaeval saints in their half-broken niches stared down upon him stonily, as though they would have said, -"So we thought, -even we!-and for our thoughts and for our creed we suffered willingly, -yet lo, we have come upon an age of the world in which the people know us not, -or knowing, laugh us all to scorn." But Cardinal Bonpre being only conscious of a perfect faith, discovered no hints of injustice or despair in the mutilated shapes of the Evangelists surrounding him, -they were the followers of Christ, -and being such, they were bound to rejoice in the tortures which made their glory. It was only the unhappy souls who suffered not for Christ at all, whom he considered were truly to be compassio

Book Excerpt: ot all. No, it certainly was not all. It was simply that I had then what I have never had since."He broke off abruptly. Then stepping back to his chair he resumed his former reclining position, leaning his head against the cushions and fixing his eyes on the solitary bright star that shone above the mist and the trembling trees."May I talk out to you?" he inquired suddenly, with a touch of whimsicality. "Or are you resolved to preach copybook moralities at me, such as 'Be good and you will be happy?'"Vesey, more ceremoniously known as Sir Francis Vesey, one of the most renowned of London's great leading solicitors, looked at him and laughed."Talk out, my dear fellow, by all means!" he replied. "Especially if it will do you any good. But don't ask me to sympathise very deeply with the imaginary sorrows of so enormously wealthy a man as you are!""I don't expect any sympathy," said Helmsley. Marie Corelli 1 May 1855 - 21 April 1924) was a British novelist. She enjoyed a period of great literary success from the publication of her first novel in 1886 until World War I. Corelli's novels sold more copies than the combined sales of popular contemporaries, including Arthur Conan Doyle, H. G. Wells, and Rudyard Kipling, although critics often derided her work as "the favourite of the common multitude Mary Mackay was born in London to Elizabeth Mills, a servant of the Scottish poet and songwriter Dr. Charles Mackay, her biological father.[3] In 1866, eleven-year-old Mary was sent to a Parisian convent to further her education. She returned to Britain four years later in 1870. Mackay began her career as a musician, adopting the name Marie Corelli for her billing. Eventually she turned to writing and published her first novel, A Romance of Two Worlds, in 1886. In her time, she was the most widely read author of fiction. Her works were collected by Winston Churchill, Randolph Churchill, and members of the British Royal Family, among others. Mackay faced criticism from the literary elite for her overly melodramatic writing. In The Spectator, Grant Allen called her "a woman of deplorable talent who imagined that she was a genius, and was accepted as a genius by a public to whose commonplace sentimentalities and prejudices she gave a glamorous setting." James Agate represented her as combining "the imagination of a Poe with the style of an Ouida and the mentality of a nursemaid

The Sorrows of Satan (1895) was one of the first modern bestsellers and was influential in establishing some of the major trends in twentieth-century bestselling fiction. The setting is London, 1895, and the Devil is on the loose. He is searching for someone morally strong enough to resist temptation, but there seems little chance he will succeed. Britain is all but totally corrupt. The aristocracy is financially and spiritually bankrupt; church leaders no longer believe in God; Victorian idealism has been banished from literature and life; and sexual morality is being undermined by the pernicious doctrines of the "New Woman." Everything and everyone is up for sale, and it takes a special kind of moral courage to resist the Devil's seductions.

"The Secret Power" is a novel written by the British author Marie Corelli. It was first published in 1921. Marie Corelli was a popular and prolific writer during the late 19th and early 20th centuries, known for her works of romantic and often fantastical fiction. "The Secret Power" is one of her later novels and falls into the genre of mystical and supernatural fiction. The novel revolves around the character of Heliobas, a mystic and spiritual guru who possesses extraordinary powers. He can not only communicate with the spirit world but also influence the thoughts and emotions of those around him. Heliobas uses these abilities to help people find spiritual enlightenment and inner peace. The novel explores the idea of a higher spiritual realm and the interconnectedness of all living beings. The story begins with the introduction of the protagonist, a young man named Paul, who is skeptical about spiritual matters and is searching for answers about the mysteries of life. He encounters Heliobas and is drawn into a world of mysticism and wonder. Through a series of encounters and experiences, Paul's perspective on life is transformed, and he begins to embrace the belief in a higher power and the interconnectedness of all existence. "The Secret Power" delves into themes of spirituality, the supernatural, and the power of the human mind. It's a novel that explores the mystical and metaphysical, blending elements of romance, philosophy, and spirituality. Corelli's writing style is characterized by vivid descriptions and a penchant for the supernatural, which adds a sense of mystery and wonder to her storytelling. While "The Secret Power" may not be as well-known today as some of Corelli's earlier works, it reflects her interest in mysticism and the exploration of spiritual and philosophical themes. Readers interested in late 19th and early 20th-century mystical and supernatural fiction may find this novel intriguing, as it offers a glimpse into the spiritual beliefs and fascinations of the era.

The Sorrows of Satan is an 1895 Faustian novel by Marie Corelli. It is widely regarded as one of the world's first bestsellers - partly due to an upheaval in the system British libraries used to purchase their books, and partly due to its popular appeal. Roundly condemned by contemporary literary critics for Corelli's moralistic and prosaic style, [1] it nonetheless had strong supporters, including Oscar Wilde and various members of royalty. Widely ignored in literary circles, it is increasingly regarded as an influential fin de siècle text. The book is occasionally subtitled "Or the Strange Experience of One Geoffrey Tempest, Millionaire".On the surface the plot follows the story of a penniless, starving author called Geoffrey Tempest. So poor that he is behind on his rent and can barely afford light in his room, he receives three letters. The first is from a friend in Australia who has made his fortune and offers to introduce him to a good friend who might be able to lift him from poverty. The second is a note from a solicitor detailing that he has inherited a fortune from a deceased relative. The third is a letter of introduction from a foreign aristocrat called Lucio, who befriends him and proceeds to be his guide in how to best use his newfound wealth. Tempest remains blissfully unaware throughout the novel, despite warnings from people he meets, that Lucio is the earthly incarnation of the Devil. Over the course of the book, his wealth leads to misery. Eventually, when confronted with the true nature of his companion, he renounces evil and returns to society penniless but content with the chance to purify his soul.
